I am truly stunned to find out my cousin Scott passed away. I was not told of his passing and feel so much heartache. When my Mom Florence Hockel Otahal was passing away, she asked if I would write to him, which I did for years. I cannot begin to say how hurt I am at his passing. God bless you dear cousin. You were a joy to me. Thank you for all of your tapes of such great music.

I was shocked and sad to hear of Scott's passing. I only heard the day before his funeral.
I knew Scott for 32 years .
My heart goes out to his family and friends . He was one of the nicest person I have ever known .
He always made me feel better when I was troubled about things .
I always think about him every day .
So long Scott. I'll catch up with you later on.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Scott. He will be greatly missed by out family. He spent many Christmas's and Thanksgiving with our family. Two Christmas's my mother made him a quilt for Christmas. He was a good man and good friend. We will certainly miss him. RIP my friend!!!!

I loved you dearly even though you pushed me away to protect me. I will never forget the profound effect you had on my life and I will miss our late night talks. I'm saddened by the realization that I will only hear your beautiful guitar music from CD now and no one will serenade me with Neil Young. You had a heart of gold. I will miss you. Like Shannon's drawings, I will look for your face in the clouds.

Just a note to say a farewell to Scott. I will miss his Christmas cards, kind words, and unexpected gifts. You will always be a real sweetie. Love you, Aunt Peggy

Scott you were my first love even though we never dated. You were the kindest funniest guy and I loved hanging with you in high school. You have always been in my thoughts and because of you I was made more aware of the mind and how it can work. May you be at peace my friend.

To my sweet and beautiful brother Scott, I can not express how much you will be missed! Your passing has left a hole in my heart and you will always be remembered and loved by your entire family. I remember when you were just a baby, daddy would come home from work and talk to you while mom was getting dinner ready. You were so animated and would get so excited , you talked with your eyes. You were such a happy and darling child. I also remember when you were about nine or ten you and your brother Tom put on a vantroloquist show for me. I can't remember who played the dummy but I laughed till I cried. I know that you are happy, well and with mom and dad. You are watching over us and we will all one day be together again. Know that you are loved and will never be forgotten. Your loving sister Claudia.

To the Hockel clan, it's been decades since I have seen any of you, but my life growing up in St Charles was forever impacted by having your family as our neighbors. My girls don't understand my emphatic attraction to Archway cookies, but they never got to see your Dad's overwhelming supply. When you moved to Wisconsin, the cookie supply dwindled, but the Hughes family link to the Hockel's never changed as we would visit Hayward and stay at the resort. So many memories, so many stories of our adventures, and they are as vivid today as they ever were. I am saddened by your loss. Other than my father, Scott is the first name I think of when referring to someone who served his country to protect me, and I am grateful to him for it. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I think of Scott every day since last Saturday. I think of the so many fun childhood memories, from riding our bikes, to camping out in the back yard, to walking to downtown St Charles. Later in life, we would meet up in Hayward, Sparta, and Tomah. Scott loved to serve, whether it be the small gifts he'd send or when we'd meet, his volunteer work, or looking in on the elderly man across the street. Love,

Claudia, Ann, Paul, Jack and Tom and your families,
I hope you find comfort in knowing that surely Scott was welcomed into the open arms of your Mom and Dad, with mine right behind them. I can't imagine wrapping my head around the loss of a sibling, but I pray that your fond memories will bring you peace, comfort, and a laugh or two. Scott served his country, his family, his friends and neighbors. For this we are thankful. When I see you in person at his service, I will share a lesson he taught me...it will make you smile.
Much love,
Patty (Hughes) Stacey

I was so saddened to hear of Scott's passing. He was the sweetest little boy, and as an adult he retained that sweetness even in the face of many challenges. Once, out of the blue, he sent me a Mini-World Grundig portable radio that receives AM, FM, and short-wave -- just so I would be "safe", no matter what happened in this crazy world. I have it and use it to this day, and yes, I do feel safer knowing that I will be prepared and connected, no matter what.
Scott had the soul of a poet. He struggled with mental challenges but never lost the love in his heart for his family and his country. He is the first of our gang of Karau cousins to pass, reducing our numbers but reminding us that the love and traditions we share will never be diminished. Rest in peace my sweet Cousin, at last. Say hi to your mom and dad for me because I sure miss them too.
