Shirley A. Henderson

Shirley A. Henderson (nee Schneider), 85, passed away peacefully at Ames Hospice House in Westlake, on March 25, 2020. She was born at University Hospital, Cleveland, on June 1, 1934, daughter of the late Hubert H. and Viola C. Schneider of Lakewood. Shirley graduated from Lakewood High School in 1952, and Wellesley College in 1956. While at college, she met Peter H. Henderson, whom she wed in 1957. She attended the Library School of Western Reserve University, where she received a Master of Library Science degree in 1957, leading to a long career at the Lakewood Public Library, until her retirement in 1997. Shirley is survived by her husband Peter; their children, Carl (Carol), Jane, and Robert (Joanne) Henderson; grandchildren, Rachel Freivogel (J), Peter Henderson (Sehar), Emma Shea, and Owen Shea; and great-grandchildren, Leon and Evelyn Freivogel. She also leaves behind her sister, Janet Macbeth (Thomas), and many nieces, nephews-in-law, grandnieces and grandnephews. A life-long Lakewood resident until moving to The Renaissance in Olmsted Township in 2013, she enjoyed books and library work, local and family history, wildflower and garden walks, performing and listening to classical music, and conversation with friends. Most of all, she loved to surround herself with family and hear stories of their lives.
