Andrew J. Paine, Jr.

Indianapolis - Andrew J. Paine, Jr., died January 29, 2018, from cancer. He was born on October 18, 1937, to Andrew J. Paine and Louise Kelly Paine. Andy earned his Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in 1959, an MBA from Indiana University in 1967 and held a certificate from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. During a distinguished thirty-seven year career in banking, he became President and COO of Indiana National Bank in 1979 and retired in 1998 as President and CEO of NBD Bank, N.A. and Executive Vice President of First Chicago NBD Corp. Beyond his banking career, Andy served on the Board of Directors of AmerUs Group, Indianapolis Life Insurance Company, Bankers Life of New York, Indianapolis Power & Light Co., IPALCO Enterprises and Indiana National Corp. He also was a Trustee of Citizens Gas & Coke Co. Andy loved banking and serving clients and the community. More importantly, he loved working with colleagues and was admired for his leadership, inclusiveness and his engaging personality.

Andy was a loyal alumnus of DePauw University where he served as President of the DePauw University Alumni Association and was a member of the Board of Trustees. Paine co-chaired DePauw University's Campaign for DePauw: Leadership for a New Century, which culminated in April 2000 with $376.6 million in gifts and commitments.

Andy was also a passionate supporter of the arts. As President of The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, he helped establish this competition as one of the premier international music competitions, while forming many lasting friendships. Additionally, Paine served as Chairman of the Board of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, leading an historic expansion of the museum. Andy's passion for these institutions contributed to the national and international recognition received by each of these Central Indiana treasures.

Many other civic institutions benefited from Andy's contributions; including him serving as Director, Indiana State Symphony Society; Co-Chairman, The Circle City Classic; President and Director, United Way of Central Indiana; Director, the Indianapolis Children's Museum; President and Director, Junior Achievement of Central Indiana; Director, National Board of Junior Achievement; Director, Indiana State Chamber of Commerce; and President and Director, the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.

Andy was recognized as a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governors Robert Orr, Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon. He received the Indianapolis Jaycees Key Man Award, 1972; the DePauw University Alumni Citation, 1978; and the Junior Achievement Gold Leadership Award, the highest volunteer award for Exemplary National Leadership, 1983. Paine was named to the Indiana University School of Business Academy of Alumni Fellows, 1983; was awarded the Wabash-DePauw, Man of the Year, 1984; the Indianapolis Fine Arts Society Community Service Award, 1990; the King-Walker-Wilkins-Young Memorial Award, 1991; the Indianapolis Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, 1991; The Thomas B. Moses Good Scout Award, 1997; and the Charles L. Whistler Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service in bringing together the public and private sectors for a better Indianapolis in 1999. In 2000, Paine was the recipient of the Old Gold Goblet, presented annually to DePauw University's outstanding alumnus in recognition of "eminence in life's work and service to Alma Mater." In 2001 he was named a member of the Indiana Academy and in 2003 he was inducted into the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame.

Andy is survived by Jane, his wife of 57 years, four children, Linda Sogard (Mike), Stephanie Paine Crossin (Jim), Randy Paine (Amy), Kouty Mawenh (Elle) and eight grandchildren, Lauren, Emily and Caroline Sogard, Jac and Katie Crossin and Andy, Molly and Charlie Paine. He is also survived by his sister Melinda Geraldson (Ray).

Andy loved his family, his career, his community and his many trips to Africa where he was a passionate wildlife photographer. He was also an avid collector of art and antiques. Andy was happiest on his deck in Pentwater, Michigan surrounded by family, friends and granddogs listening to his beloved World Series Champion Chicago Cubs.
