Virginia Reichard Obituary

Virginia Evelyn Reichard, 93

Virginia Evelyn "Ginny" Reichard, 93, longtime resident of West Lafayette, died January 21 in Carlsbad, California.

Virginia was born on April 1, 1921, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Christopher and Pauline Kougias. She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1939. While there, she was active on the debate team, served as class president, and worked as a reporter for the New Bedford Standard Times. She went on to the University of Chicago and graduated with a B.A. in History in 1944.

She married Hugo M. "Rick" Reichard on August 28, 1943. During the first three years of their marriage, Rick was serving in the Army in Europe. After the war, they lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she worked at the Harvard Law School Library, and then in Durham, North Carolina.

The Reichards moved to West Lafayette in 1956. Rick taught at Purdue University for more than three decades and predeceased Virginia in 1998. In their early years in West Lafayette, Virginia worked in the Purdue University Library in the Reference Department. She continued to reside in West Lafayette until 2012.

Virginia was a lifelong advocate of public libraries. She was a member of the Friends of the West Lafayette Public Library and the Friends of the Tippecanoe Public Library. As a member of the former Story Art League, she regularly read at the afternoon Children's Story Hour in Lafayette's former Wells Memorial Library.

She was a founding member of the New Chauncey Neighborhood Association, and a member of the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art, the Lafayette Art League, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Purdue Women's Club, the YWCA, and the Hoosier Environmental Council.

Virginia enjoyed going to art museums and concerts, reading and sharing good books and newspapers, writing letters, cooking, swimming, and taking part in civic affairs. She was also an avid and accomplished photographer. She was devoted to her family and many friends.

Virginia was predeceased by her siblings Julie, Sophie, and George Kougias.

She is survived by three children, Enid Satariano (Bill) of Pleasant Hill, CA, Claude Reichard (Susanna) of Sunnyvale, CA, and Eric Reichard (Pam) of Carlsbad, CA; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister-in-law Trudy Kougias of N. Richland Hills, TX; several nieces and nephews; and cousin Virginia Callas of New Bedford, MA.

Those who wish to make a contribution in Virginia's memory are encouraged to donate to the public library of their choice.

My husband, Peter, and I were fortunate to know Ginny. We got to know her when she knocked on our door at 835 N. Salisbury and told me that she had lived in the same house earlier in her time in West Lafayette. She remained a strong advocate for the neighborhood until she left West Lafayette. She was always positive and on the right side of every issue in West Lafayette. I was impressed by her intelligence and was lucky to receive many letters, usually including articles from her reading, from her over the years. The world and especially our neighborhood is a better place because of Ginny. We think of her often.

Ginny had such an interest in photography. I'd enjoyed meeting her while I worked for Berry's, seems so long ago and yet not, and helping her make the pictures that pleased her. She and Rick brought a lot to our community, and they will both be missed.

I currently work at University Place and when Ginny was there I was her day time C.N.A. I have written to Ginny many times since she had moved. She was a sweet dear friend. I will miss her greatly.

I loved your Mom. I ran the University Place Exercise program when she was a resident there. She used to tell me how much she enjoyed the class. She was always so caring, soft spoken, and always a pleasure to spend time with. She will remain always in my heart.

Enid,
I am so sorry to learn of the passing of your mother. I still picture her and your house on Salisbury St. as a familiar and welcoming presence as we wandered the sidewalks to and from school and at play throughout our childhood. Sympathy to everyone in your family.
