John E. Flaherty

AGE: 95 •

John E. Flaherty passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at his home he'd been living in for 53 years at the age of 95. Born in 1921 in Brooklyn, NY, he started work as a longshoreman, then served as a lieutenant in the US Navy in WWII on the USS Alabama in the Atlantic and the USS Magoffin in the Pacific, including the Battle of Okinawa.

A graduate of Union College, he received a PhD in Russian studies at NYU. He ultimately switched to business management and became the Dean of the Lubin School of Business at Pace University in New York. There he became an author and leading expert on the work of Peter Drucker, the man who invented modern management studies and with whom he was friends. Among other things he was the best read individual his son, Martin has ever met, an ideal father and always a wonderful mentor.

John was predeceased by his wife, Christine. He is survived by his son, Martin Flaherty of New York City and his two grandchildren Aisling and Ciara.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church, Convent Sta., NJ on Friday at 11:00AM. Entombment Holy Rood Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to the mass at St. Thomas More Church beginning at 9:00AM.
