Phaedon Kozyris Obituary
KOZYRIS Phaedon John Kozyris, age 78, of Thessaloniki, Greece and formerly of Upper Arlington, died Thursday, February 10, 2010 in Greece. He was born January 2, 1932 in Thessaloniki, son of the late Yianni and Maria Kozyris. He was Professor Emeritus of Law at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, retiring in 1995 following 25 years on faculty. He continued to teach law at his alma mater, The University of Thessaloniki until his retirement in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Litsa Kozyris of Greece; daughters and sons-in-law, Maria and Tim Rankin, Kynthia and Bryan Drosech; grandchildren, Nicholas, Maxwell, Alex, Stella, and Leona, all of Upper Arlington, OH; step-sons, Nick Margetis and wife, Alexandra and Steve Margetis and his daughters, Eleni and Antonia, all of Columbus, OH; sister-in-law, Lili Kozyris; niece, Maria and nephew, Yianni, all of Greece. Also preceded in death by his brother Kimon Kozyris. After earning his law degree from University of Thessaloniki, he continued his studies with a Juris Doctorate from Cornell University; a LLM from University of Chicago and a SJD from University of Pennsylvania. Following nine years of private practice in New York and Paris, France, John joined the faculty at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1969. He devoted his life to law both in the United States and abroad. A well-known and respected international legal scholar, he became a pioneer and advocate for the formation of the European Economic Community. John was a founder and instructor for many years for summer law programs in Greece, conducted through the law schools at Tulane University and Capital University. He was one of the founders and supporters of Modern Greek Studies at The Ohio State University. He was an avid bridge and backgammon player, loved to teach and inspire others, and a world traveler. He was the author of numerous books, articles and publications on International Law and other legal subjects. John was not only known as a scholar, he loved his family, friends and a good joke.
