Jock Penn Obituary

Jock Penn

Jock Penn, age 71, died at home in Shawano on October 3 Jock graduated from Shawano High School in 1960, went to UW Madison for one year, and then joined the U.S. Army where he worked in army intelligence. He later received his BA in journalism from San Francisco State University in 1973 and his law degree from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California in 1980. Although he was a member of the State Bar of California, he chose not to practice law.

He lived in New York City in the late 1960s, then moved to California in 1969 where he worked in the Post Office. Jock was a union steward for many years during which he helped numerous fellow workers in difficult, sometimes critical situations. He retired in 2002. Jock moved back to Shawano in late 2006 to care for his aging mother, first at home, then visiting her every day when she was in a nursing home, and bringing her home every Sunday. He was an exceptionally devoted son, a loving brother and a loyal friend.

Jock had a great capacity for presence and empathy, sitting and listening intently and responding thoughtfully to anyone who spoke with him, both in person and on the telephone, whether he had known them for 50 years or had just met them. He lived with an unpretentious level of personal integrity, honesty, generosity and grace. With his keen intelligence, endless curiosity and breadth of knowledge, he loved engaging with people about politics, literature, music, film and other subjects, always questioning and going deeper into the heart of things. He had a quick wit and was an eloquent raconteur with a deep sonorous voice and a full appreciative laugh.

A man of contradictions, he was a recluse who had many close friends across the U.S. from Connecticut and Massachusetts to Tennessee, Wisconsin, Utah, California and Hawaii. He was unassuming, yet was someone to whom one would immediately be drawn when he entered a room. Jock was warm and charming, yet emotionally restrained and deeply private. In many ways he was easy going and accepting of human foibles, but when he saw an injustice he would act with fierce determination and purity of intention to right it.

Jock was prepared for death when it came. He believed that death is a natural and necessary part of the cycle of life, that loss and sorrow are inevitable, and that they are a worthwhile price that we pay for the privilege of loving. He will be missed more than he could ever have imagined.

He is survived by his loving sister, Kristin Penn and her spouse, Michelle Mills; his close and special cousin, Leslee Jepson who cared for him during his several health crises over the last 1 ½ years, and her husband Curt; cousins Leah Jepson, Rachel Wolf and her husband Pete and their children Sage and Lupine; Kurt Huebner and his wife Susan; Fritz Huebner and his son Jurgen; and William Huebner; and many friends who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Penn; his father, Jack Penn; his aunts and uncles: Leah and Les Brackob, Emil and Lorraine Huebner, Karl and Doris Huebner; and a cousin, Jackie Huebner.

Jock did not want a memorial service. There will be an informal farewell gathering on Saturday, October 19th from 1 - 3pm in the lounge of the First Presbyterian Church in Shawano to share memories and stories. Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano is assisting with the arrangements.

I am sad about Jock going home & it was too soon. I'll miss his smile & gentile manners, since of humor...& wit. I worked with him at USPO in San Rafael '74-89. He saved my life. I had some political problems etc at work & he helped me tremendously! For 2yrs we delt with federal Supreme Court. And he helped me keep sober also. Afterwards he said he'd never practice law again. He is unique individual & will always be in my heart & I'll hear his voice in my memory***
Thank you & I love you. You are a great man***

Jock and I served in the army together (ASA). We first met at Zama, Japan, and went to Viet Nam and served in the 7th RRU together there. We lost track of each other after returning to the States. Just now I decided to search for him on the internet and am so sorry to find his obituary. He was a fine man when I knew him and I am sure he was a fine man until the day he died. It was simply in his nature. I'm just sorry that I didn't search for him years ago so I could have known him more.

Our deepest sympathy for Jock's passing. I worked with him at the Post Office in San Rafael, CA for many years. I was a union steward for the letter carriers at the time. Many times we shared information to achieve successful grievances. Jock is well remembered here at the San Rafael Post Office and many send their thoughts and prayer to the family. God Bless.

Jock and I had an unusual partnership for many years. I was a supervisor he was my "go to" union steward for most issues. While we had the most outrageous arguments over gawd knows how many important (as well as trivial) issues, we also had great respect for each other. So many times during a busy day I'd find myself drifting to the area he was working simply to get his opinion on events of the day, or just plain shoot the bull. If I wanted to know a specific thing, I'd ask HIM.
I'm glad I knew him.

Jock Penn was my friend. I am so proud to say that. I knew Jock for well over half of my life and worked with him for about twenty-five years. There aren't enough superlatives to describe the person that Jock was, not the least of which was the integrity he possessed. He was one of the most intelligent people I've ever known. There was hardly a subject that you couldn't discuss with him, except for maybe sports. Over the years we had many marathon conversations about music and especially film. I watch a lot of movies and since his passing earlier this month, I've seen a few that I told myself that I wanted to discuss with Jock during our next conversation. And then I would tear up when reality hit me and I realized that I will never have the enjoyment of discussing film with him again.
Jock also had an unbelievable quick wit and a wonderful dry sense of humor. He was usually in very good spirits at work. However, when there was occasionally a problem on the dock with one of the truck drivers, you could hear Jock's powerful vocal chords bellowing out, " Houston, we have a problem ", which would get several people laughing. I will always chuckle to myself when I think about that. It was his way of summoning a supervisor.
However, this all being said, Jock's finest quality was his willingness to help anyone who was having a work issue. He was undoubtedly the finest shop steward I'd ever known in my nearly thirty years with the post office, which no doubt was because of the law degree he had. Or, you could ask his advice on some other difficult issue you were dealing with and he was always willing to offer his guidance.
Jock was my confidant, my mentor, but most of all, he was my friend. Losing him is like losing a special relative and I will miss him more than anyone can imagine. I'm quite sure that anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him feels the same. Rest in peace, my friend.
