Leon Markowicz Obituary

Leon Markowicz LEBANON Leon Markowicz traveled into The Great Beyond on Friday, November 15, 2013, at his home after a lengthy dance with Multiple Myeloma. Born on November 9, 1940, in Detroit, Mich., to Steve Markowicz and Stella Bukowski, he attended Our Lady Gate of Heaven Elementary, Holy Ghost Fathers Missions Seminary, Ann Arbor, then joined the Holy Ghost Fathers after professing vows at their novitiate in Ridgefield, Conn. As a seminarian, he was graduated from Duquesne University, then studied theology at St. Mary's seminary, Norwalk, Conn. After being voted down for ordination, he was assigned to St. Joseph's Home for Homeless and Industrious Boys in Philadelphia, where he obtained a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1971 he joined the English Department at Lebanon Valley College until he retired in 2008. He taught courses including freshman composition, Shakespeare, organizational communications, leadership and executive communications. He also team-taught accounting, chemistry, and strategic management in an attempt to integrate written and oral communications into all business administration, economics and accounting courses. Not wanting to bore students and himself, he called his courses "experiences," which included small group work and oral presentations, which were taped and reviewed by the entire class. He served on college committees by election, by volunteering and at the request of faculty, deans and presents. He was the first director of the Honors Program and the first coordinator of the Academic Support Program, as well as the first recipient of the Lindback teaching award. Leon became a Fellow of the Pennsylvania Writing Project at West Chester, PA and completed the Faculty Development Workshop in Military Leadership in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Military Academy. He presented papers on writing and communications at state, regional, and national professional conferences. As a stringer for The Lebanon Daily News, he covered school board and township meets and sports. He also consulted for local business for communication and leadership. A member of the executive board of the Northeastern Association of Business, Economics and Technology, he served as associate editor and co-editor of the group's journal. A founding member of the Lancaster-Lebanon Writing Council, he held several offices. As a volunteer, he started the Lebanon Valley College blood bank, was instrumental in LVC's participation in the Free Noon Meals program. He also served on the Annville Township Planning Commission and tutored at the Lebanon County prison. Later, he obtained a Master's degree in creative writing from Antioch University, Yellow Springs, OH and acted as a presenter and judge for the International Society of Poetry in Owings Mills, MD. A horrible singles tennis player, he and his doubles partner, Bob Kopp, competed in local tournaments and in USTA 4.0 leagues in sectional, regional, and national play. He was a founding member and secretary of the Lebanon County Tennis Association. He traveled to Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and attended Wimbledon and the Australian Open. He also traveled in the United States, preferring his two favorite cities, New Orleans and Seattle. He is survived by Constance B. Traub, his loyal and patient lifetime partner; his daughter, Leah Rhodes of Ringgold, GA, and husband, Geoff, and sons, Simon and Micah; his daughter, Eve Markowicz, and son Avery, also of Ringgold, GA. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Smith, of Atoka, TN. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, December 1, at Zimmerman Recital Hall on the campus of Lebanon Valley College, Route 934, Annville. The service will begin at 3 p.m. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lebanon Valley College. Please send and mark your gift as follows: "A gift to Lebanon Valley College in memory of Leon Markowicz." Memorial contributions may also be made to the Hematology/Oncology department of the Good Samaritan Hospital. Ave atque Vale. www.kreamerfuneralhome.com

Memories and Condolences
for Leon Markowicz

Not sure what to say?

I first met Leon when he came to Detroit to handle affairs when his father Steve passed away. He and his uncle Joe Markowicz (my father) became close friends over the years and Leon always made it a point to stop and see Joe when in the area. I was impressed with his wisdom and the ease with which he appreciated life, not to mention his sense of humor. I was surprised to see him at my father's funeral but was glad he was there. He rode in my car to the cemetery with my wife and daughter. We threatened to play eachother in tennis but that never happened as he was too busy playing with the Corvrtte he always wanted (and never let me drive). Leon was a class act who will surely be missed.

I have fond memories of honors dinners at Dr. Markowicz's house where he fed us all with food and conversation. I also specifically remember when a fellow student got into a fender bender on the main road, and I went to pick her up. I looked around, realized how close I was, and I knew that if I had needed to, I could have gone to Dr. Markowicz's house, knocked, and simply said, "I need help." I had all the confidence in the world that help would be given to me. That was an amazing gift he gave me as a student. He was a good man, and I'm grateful to him for touching my life. Dear Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Leon when I lived in Annville with my family who were husband Fred Grun and our children Ellen and Emily. I was graduated from LVC in 1976 as a "mature student." Our family spent a lot of time with the Markowiczes and other LVC professors and their families. I remember his family fondly and am grateful for the times we shared.

Shalom,

Donna

Dr. Markowicz challenged me...challenged all of us to constantly strive to write, speak, read the most effective way possible. And as tough, unrelenting, harsh as he could be...sometimes bringing students to tears...we always new how much he loved to laugh, too. He beat us with his sarcasm, yet gently encouraged us, as well. I still have the Shakespeare rubbing he gave me in 1982...the year I fell in love with Shakespeare's works. May God comfort and bless his family, his friends, and all who mourn him. I am thankful for Dr. Markowicz and his gifts.

My first memory of Lee Markowicz is from English Comp I ("freshmen comp"). For a nervous first-year student at LVC, it was truly an intimidating experience, though I realized later that it had actually been a rewarding one. We reconnected years later on the tennis courts, and I'm glad we did. Lee was a fierce competitor and fine player, especially in doubles. He and Bob Kopp were a tough tandem! No surprise when I state that he was tougher on himself as a player than he needed to be, but what would you expect from Lee? I always enjoyed our conversations whenever we met up with each other either on the courts or somewhere else. He was an interesting, learned man who was never without a thought-provoking comment. Rest in peace, Dr. Markowicz. May you find a suitable tennis court somewhere in the Great Beyond.

I had the pleasure (although I didn't view it quite that way back then) of having Dr. Markowicz for Shakespeare I and II while an English major at LVC. He challenged me to think deeply and to write with proficiency. I can't thank him enough for challenging me to do more and to do it to the best of my abilities. I owe a great deal of my professional success to his unwillingness to accept mediocre. I will forever be grateful to him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. Thank you Dr. Markowicz.

I had Dr. Markowicz as a professor when I attended LVC. He was very instrumental in developing my leadership skills and applying what I did on the basketball court to life as a professional. He was very, very tough on me while there, but very supportive of all my endeavors. I thoroughly enjoyed many conversations with him during my time at LVC as a student and on a few occasions when I had seen him after graduation. I have not seen him in years, but I have thought about him and talked about him often to others. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I will remember Dr. Markowicz always!

I was never a student of his, but I was student of the college. Later, I became an adjunct teacher at the school. I played Leon in tennis/ maybe 10 or so times. He's one of 2 people who used to beat me the worst. I'm grateful that he had the patience to play someone who was not serious competition.
