Ben Hoerner Obituary

Dr. Ben L. Hoerner

December 18, 1944 - October 31, 2017

Dr. Ben L. Hoerner joined his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the early morning of Tuesday, October 31, 2017. He was known by all as a faithful man of God. His passing marked the end of a nearly 10 year struggle with kidney cancer during which he never surrendered or lost his abiding trust and hope in the Lord.

Throughout 50 years of marriage, including his bout with cancer, his wife Bonnie cared for and supported him in what was a truly blessed partnership. Together they raised three children, Jason, Angela and Rachel, to whom he was a devoted father. He treated his daughter-in-law, Sumiko, and son-in-law, Scott, as his own children. His six grandchildren felt his unconditional love for them and affectionately called him "Papa." He had a loving sister and brother-in-law, Dianne and Doug, and a brother, Dennis.

Ben was a skilled dentist who practiced for over 45 years. He was viewed as a blessing to those he provided treatment and with whom he worked professionally. He treated patients in a variety of capacities, including as an Army Captain deployed to Okinawa, heading the dental clinic at MacLaren School for Boys from 1973-1978 and in private practice for 30 years. He joined the dental clinic at Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP) in 2007. He also frequently donated professional services to people in need. Ben used his dentistry skills to bring healing to many people. He felt great fulfillment when caring for patients at OSP, even as he fought cancer.

He attended Salem Evangelical Church and supported and served its congregation as a council member and usher.

Ben loved God, his family, friends and country. He loved travelling with his wife and family. He avidly enjoyed fine food, history, football, movies and cars.

He would want all who read this, particularly those who are experiencing trials, to call upon and always trust in God and His faithfulness.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Attitude (campattitude.org) or Salem Evangelical Mission's Fund.

Memorial Services will be Monday, November 6th at 11 am at Salem Evangelical Church, 455 Locust St NE. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
