Charles Dickens Obituary

CHARLES EUGENE DICKENS, 79, formerly of Dunbar, West Virginia, went to his heavenly home on August 7, 2024, to join his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Charles was born on February 9,1945, to the late Elmer Douglas (Red) Dickens and Frances (Geneive) Hinzman-Dickens at Camp LeJeune, NC. A couple years later the family moved to Cross Lanes, WV where he was raised with his siblings.
Charles had a love for nature and all animals. Some of his fondest memories were of him and his brother, Mike exploring in the woods. He was a graduate of Nitro High School and joined the US Marine Corps, where he received a medical honorable discharge. Charles married and started a family in Dunbar, WV, near his grandparents' house. He raised his children in the Christian faith and attended many churches over the years. He was a visionary and always followed his dreams.
Charles was very active and enjoyed rock climbing, hiking, the arts, sewing, roller skating, cars, stamps and flea marketing. He was a black belt in karate, master mechanic, machinist, woodworker and locksmith. He could fabricate parts to fix things like no other.
Charles worked alongside his father, Red, at their business, National Hydraulics, Inc, in St. Albans, WV for many years. He continued his education over the years and held certificates in multiple areas. He later enrolled into WVU in Montgomery, WV, where he met friends from The Cornerstone Theater Company and volunteered making stages and backdrops in his spare time.
In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his son, Charles Eugene Dickens, Jr., his brother, Elmer Douglas (Doug) Dickens, Jr., and many special loved ones.
Charles is survived by his brother, Michael (Sue) Dickens of Deltona, FL, his sisters, Irene (Edward) Kiser of Jacksonville, FL, and Ellen (Kent) Smith, of Jacksonville, FL, his sister-in-law, Helen Lively Dickens of Oxford, MI and their families. Also survived are his daughters, Genanne Crockett of Oviedo, FL, Rose (Larry) Pierce of Dunbar, WV, Amy (John) Smith of Scott Depot, WV, Marie (Brian) Drain of Fisherville, KY, Laura McVicker of Dunbar, WV, and his son, Adam Dickens of Mayflower, AR. Also survived by his grandchildren Ariel Crockett, Michalene Crockett, Christopher Rafferty, Kayla (David) Otis, Zachary Crockett, Emily Smith, Taylor Smith, Andrew Drain, Samantha (Cameron) Lewis, Steven McVicker II, Garren Dickens and Zander Dickens and his great grandchildren.
The last years of his life he spent living in Scott Depot, WV being cared for and loved by his family. He attended Mountain Heights Church with his daughter, Rose. His family want to thank the hospice and private caregivers that provided him endless support and love until the end. He will be greatly missed.
Celebration of Charles's life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 11, 2024 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home, Cross Lanes with Rev. Brian Hughes officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by St Albans VFW Post 6418 and American Legion Post 73.
Gathering of family and friends will be from 12 until time of service at the funeral home.
