Daniel Hutchens died on May 9, 2021. Daniel will forever exist as a rock & roll poet of the highest order. He looms as an essential figure in the Athens, Georgia, music scene and worldwide. Daniel epitomized the essence of a songwriter—he wrote hundreds of incandescent tunes. His lyrical talent exceeds all the rigid standards of excellence.
Daniel moved to Athens with his songwriter partner of 44 years, Eric Carter, in 1986, from Ripley, West Virginia. They formed Bloodkin and their recordings and live performances transcend time. Eric Carter provided the music to Daniel's iron-clad words and their music will always remain a potent—everlasting—combination. Bloodkin earned respect among some of music's legends like Phil Walden, R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Bobby Keys, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Chuck Leavell, Jerry Joseph, David Barbe and The Drive By Truckers to name only a few.
Anyone who really knew Daniel understands all too well he's an irreplaceable original. He proved to be a soft-spoken writer, kindhearted friend and loving father...almost a saint. He always made time for fans. Those who really knew him understood his fantastic sense of humor as well as his cutthroat dedication to his craft. Daniel's grace resides in his compositions.
His sad passing delivers an everlasting heartbreak, but in the end his soulful songs bring us all redemption. And that's how he always wanted it...
Daniel is survived by his children Amberly and Zacary, brother William H. Hutchens Ill (Morgantown, WV), sisters Lynda Irene Hutchens (Portland, OR), and Sandra Ann Hutchens (Fort Wayne, IN).
