Dan was the reason I became a psychologist. He was the youth group leader for our synagogue in Paterson, NJ while he completed his Ph.D. at Columbia. He had me reading Freud at the age of 16. We had a small, close group, learned much, and had good fun.

I thought of Dr. Sugarman recently because I was discussing how he tested my son's IQ at age 3 with my daughter in law. I decided to google him and saw that he had passed away two years ago. Dr. Sugarman was my therapist for many years and helped me navigate the most difficult times in my life... separation, divorce, the sudden loss of my 54 year old father right in front of me and my young child, single parenting. Many of the things that he said to me stay with me to this day. I will never forget his strength, caring, wisdom and valuable guidance. My sincere condolences to his family.

I was privileged to be a student in a graduate course on child development taught by Dr. Sugarman in the early 1980s. His impact on me as an early childhood professional and as a human being was enormous, just from that one class; I've quoted him all my life. Truly saddened to hear of his passing.

Dan (Danny to me) was my mother's first cousin and since she was an only child, Dan filled an uncle nice in my life. He was always loving, funny, witty, smart and compassionate. He was a loyal correspondent to my parents in the last few years. If a family member forgot their birthday a card from Dan would serve as a reminder. The world was a better place with Dan making us laugh. I will miss you, Danny

Dan was a truly outstanding colleague and a great guy. When I first started teaching at William Paterson in the 1980s, he quickly became my role model for how to interact with students and professors. He knew what was important and what to let go. His balance of writing, teaching, and clinical work was impressive. His lectures were terrific. Funny, compassionate, insightful, and creative. He also stood up for Jewish interests, even when doing so was unpopular. I really liked and admired him. I'll miss him.

In the mid 1970's we [Dr. Naficy] and I shared an office with Dr. Sugarman. After we all moved to different offices we were in touch professionally over the years, and again had offices in the same building in the early 2000's. During all of the years that I had the pleasure to know him, he was always the nicest, kindest, and funniest person. He was a truly caring individual and will be remembered most fondly.

I shared many hours @ the shaving mirror @ the Y with Dan and we talked and kibitzed quite a bit. He was a happy guy, we enjoyed some laughs and he will be missed

During the seventies, I took any course at Wm.Paterson that Dr. Sugarman taught. He took the time to discuss some of my personal issues. Years later, he tested and counseled my son. He was a brilliant, caring man who bettered the lives of those he touched.

I am so grateful for the wonderful friendship Dan had with my father. He was a one of a kind man with such insight and a sense of humor! He was such a vital soul. May you be comforted with memories and the legacy he leaves.
