PORTLAND -- David Paul McCarthy, 29, died of a drug overdose on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, losing a long- fought battle with drug addiction - a challenge faced by many families today.
A graduate of Falmouth High School, David was one of three brothers and was proud to be the only one born in Maine. His life was filled with adventure, friends and family. From Falmouth, to Costa Rica to Italy, he made friends wherever he went. His heart was as big as the mountain he truly loved, Sugarloaf, where he worked at the Bag and Kettle and was an avid snowboarder known to all as 'Davey.' His skill as a cook and sous-chef in a frantic-paced restaurant was second to none.
David had a magnificent sense of humor, was generous and loving, almost to a fault. He was a great friend to many, lending support and love to those in need. His smile could light up a room, and he wanted everyone to laugh with him. Among the many things he loved passionately were his legions of friends, his dog, Kima, The Big Lebowski, and The Wire. He was a bit of an outlier in that he rooted for the Patriots, the Celtics, the Bruins and, because most of the family is from New York originally, the Yankees.
David is survived by his father, Kevin J. McCarthy and stepmother Nancy Lund of Falmouth, his mother, Anne Ireland and stepfather Kenneth Cole, also of Falmouth; his two brothers and their spouses, Charles and Julie McCarthy, and their daughter Leah of Essex, Vt., and Jared McCarthy and Brock Hollowell McCarthy of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his stepbrothers, Nick Lund of Washington, D.C., Alex Lund of Stratton, Tristram Cole and his wife Jennie Theriault of Portland, Nick Cole and his wife Jessica Tillery Cole of Scarborough, and Dorian Cole and her husband Nick Morrill of South Portland; and his dog, Kima.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary, 43 Foreside Rd., Falmouth. Arrangements are by Jones Rich & Hutchins, Portland. For additional information and to sign the online guest book, please visit www.jonesrichandhutchins.com.

Kevin and family... I am so shocked! I did not know David as he grew to be a man, I do know how much you love your boys, displaying them in your office as the years passed. Thought of David alot on my 4-day moto trip to the canyonlands of Utah...he seemed to be such a part of the landscape to me/so mysterious and vast. I last saw David when he was about 10 years old all childhood innocense and energy...that's how I'll remember him. I'll always think of him when I return to Utah and smile underneath my helmet/remembering....my heart goes out to all especially to Anne and Kevin.

You dont know me...but I to have a son, that is addicted to drugs & alcohol ...35 yrs old, married with two beautiful children. When I read your beautiful words about your son David...I was reading about mine son Jason. I pray every day that my son will want to clean up and I pray for him to live long after I am gone. I dont go a day with out asking the Lord to send the Holy spirit down into him, and for him receive the spirit with grace. I look into my sons eyes and I see him as my first born, an innocent angel.....God bless all of Davids family....I will keep you in my prayers.......and please pray for Jason, my son.

You do not know me, but I wanted to say that I am terribly sorry for the loss of your son David. I know this heartache, as my son died less than a year ago at 22 from an accidental drug overdose related to a battle with addiction. Your son sounded like a wonderful spirited young man with a loving family. Thank you for also being willing to speak the truth about your son and acknowledging that many families struggle with this. No words will do, but please accept my deepest sympathy for your entire family.

It's hard to understand why this tragedy happened to such a great kid and his family. My brother and Dave played together as kids and I remember a very vibrant, colorful, and compassionate young mind. My prayers are forever with his family.

My heart breaks for David's family. I remember David as the super-cute little brother with curly hair chasing after the big boys and wanting to do everything they were doing. It sounds as though he grew into a fine young man and I'm so sorry that he left so soon.
