DOUGLAS IRWIN Obituary

DOUGLAS H. IRWIN Douglas H. Irwin, born August 23, 1927, passed away peacefully January 12, 2018, surrounded by family. Doug was indeed a fortunate individual. He devoted his life to the practice of oral surgery and in so doing accumulated many friends and associates throughout his life. He was blessed to have had the love of a devoted family and wife. He was inspired by a loving wife, Sue, and Christian friends who supported him always. He had a lifelong interest in fitness and enjoyed gardening, ballroom dancing, fly fishing, and long walks with Sue both home and abroad. His ambition in life was to be a good husband and father, at which he succeeded. He was loved and will be missed. He was preceded in death by his son, John Douglas Irwin. He is survived by his wife, Sue Irwin, children, Amanda Irwin (Ross Reed), Roberto Irwin, Diane Dercher (Eric), Jennifer Irwin (Pedro Carranza), John Coe (Debbie), and grandchildren, August Irwin, Abby and David Dercher, John and Chris Molina, and Jack, David and Lydia Coe. Memorial Services will be 3:00 pm Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64113. A private burial of ashes will be at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Country Club Christian Church, St. Luke's Hospice House, and to the Dr. Douglas Irwin Memorial Scholarship at UMKC School of Dentistry.

Doug was a true friend to Hugh,
and myself. He had a wonderful,
subtle humor, and I'll always
remember him singing and directing
a Spike Jones number, which was part of our music therapy gig at a nursing home! On another occasion, he and Hugh assembled a 'rocking wheel chair', that I had planned to market in the Greater K.C. nursing homes. They
did a great job of putting it together, but unfortunately, the one piece they couldn't identify
(so left it out), was the Anti-tipping device! Needless to say, the demonstrations didn't go well, and we all felt relieved when I shipped it back, and we didn't get sued.
Doug loved to laugh, and had an infectious smile. He enjoyed the many years after retirement, volunteering in the Dental Clinic at the Kansas Federal Prison., where he continued with
his quiet manner, helping people
in need. Yes, I and many others will miss him greatly, and pray for Sue as she works her way through the grief process. Much love to all the Irwins, Sharon Bell

Doug was truly my mentor sharing his love for oral surgery with me. He inspired me not only professionally but served as an example of a man with great integrity. Ken Nelson
