GLENN SHIVELY Obituary

SHIVELY

GLENN, one of the country's preeminent experts in the healthcare industry died suddenly on Monday, August 31, 2015, at the age of 69.
Born in Philadelphia, Glenn grew up in Flourtown. In 1968, Glenn received a BS from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. Following graduation, he served his country proudly as a U.S. Naval Officer on the nuclear powered submarine, The USS Will Rogers. Upon leaving the Navy, Glenn returned to his alma mater and received an MBA in 1973. He then began a long, successful career as a consultant with the Professional Services Firm of Lybrand, Ross Brothers and Montgomery. As the firm grew to become Coopers & Lybrand and eventually Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, Glenn served as an advisor to many of the most prestigious hospitals and healthcare systems in the United States. He became a partner in 1980 and served as the Firm's National Healthcare Industry Chairman. He also was a member of the Firm's Council (Board of Directors). He even served as a spokesman for the firm in a 1994 network television commercial that aired nationally.
Upon reaching mandatory retirement age, Glenn turned his attention towards the community. He put his expertise to work as a member of the Board of Project H.O.M.E., a non-profit devoted to ending homelessness in Philadelphia. Sister Mary Scullion, Project H.O.M.E's Co-Founder, said "Glenn's kind-ness, sensitivity and goodness and great talent were instrumental in bringing the Stephen Klein Wellness Center to fruition with a solid business plan and principles. It will be hard to imagine life without him." The $18 million Wellness Center opened in December of 2014 in North Philadelphia to provide primary care, dental care and behavioral health care to those most in need.
Additionally, Glenn served on the Committee of Seventy, the Wake Forest University Board of Visitors (where his children attended college) along with boards for The Baldwin School and The Elwyn Institute. He was a passionate lifelong Philadelphia sports fan who was fortunate to be present when the Phillies won the World Series in 2008.
Glenn was a devoted family man and is survived by his beloved wife Debbie, children Chris, Pam and Courtney, and brother, Bruce.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Sept. 11 at 1:00 P.M. at Bryn Mawr Presby-terian Church in Bryn Mawr, PA. In honor of Glenn's passion and commitment to the mission of Project H.O.M.E. the family requests, that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Project H.O.M.E., 1515 Fair-mount Ave., Phila., PA 19130.

To the Shively family: I have just learned of Glenn's death in the January issue of the Pennsylvania Gazette. I met Glenn when I was a freshman at Penn in 1965; he and I subsequently roomed together at AXP fraternity and then at Hamilton Court apartments, until Glenn left for Navy OCS after his first year in the Wharton MBA program. I was able to reconnect with him 20 years later after seeing him on a national television commercial for Coopers-Lybrand. I had always admired Glenn for his sense of purpose and diligence in all his responsibilities, and many of my memories of my time at Penn involve him. My condolences to his family--he was truly an outstanding, honorable individual. With great respect, Brent Grishkin MD COL(RET)USA

I was saddened to see the notice of Glenn's passing in the Pennsylvania Gazette of January 2016, and regret I did not know sooner. Glenn and I were classmates K-12, and at Penn, where I did not see much of him, being in the College while he was at Wharton. We grew up a few blocks from each other, my younger brother Arthur was a classmate of Bruce Shively, and our mothers were friendly as well. I remember playing street ball, and box ball during recess at the Pennell school with Glenn, who was alway the captain of our team. Rest in peace, Glenn, I'm sorry we lost touch all those years ago. Glenn was guided by a deep sense of the drive to serve others, particularly those facing greater barriers to living high quality lives. He was one of the central drivers to realizing a dream to provide high quality, comprehensive primary care in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Brilliant. Passionate. Effective. One of my heroes and I will miss him.
