Harold Gentry Obituary

Published by Garrett Funeral Home on Jun. 24, 2005.
A loving and loyal husband, brother, uncle and friend, Harold was born in Buncombe County on Nov. 12, 1918. He was educated in the Buncombe County Schools and then bravely served terms in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. He was among the first troops to land on Guadalcanal for one of the hardest fought battles of the Pacific campaign against the Japanese.

After the war, Harold and his wife Joyce settled in Newport News, Virginia. He worked for over thirty years at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. His efforts assisted with the construction of many battleships, aircraft carriers, and submarines. Harold took great pride in the completion of each vessel he contributed its construction.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, brother Earnest Gentry, and sister Edith McElrath. He is survived by his sister Vivian Jarrett of Charlotte, brother-in-law Earl Gribble of Waynesville, nephews Frank Jarrett of Wichita, Kansas, Hank Jarrett of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Mike Gribble of Atlanta, and niece Linda York of Greenville, South Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at the Chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. Receiving of friends will be held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.
