Helen Fleming Obituary

Helen Juanita Fleming

Knoxville, TN

Helen Juanita Fleming, age 89, passed away March 9th at 7:45 a.m. Juanita, from Moss, Mississippi, graduated from Mississippi College in 1949. She married the love of her life, Eugene (Gene) Fleming, March 6, 1949. They were married 59 years. Gene passed away March 10, 2008. Juanita had two children, Mark and Ellen. She was a devoted and loving wife, and mother, and an amazing teacher of high school English. She taught at White House High School from 1971 to 1978. Many of her students continued to write her letters of appreciation for many years after she quit teaching. She was also a substitute English teacher for several years at Bearden High School. Juanita moved to Knoxville in 1979. She taught Sunday School and led a morning women's Bible study for 20 years, in churches, where her husband was a minister, throughout the Knoxville area. Gene and Juanita enjoyed traveling. They took the family on camping trips throughout the 50 states. They enjoyed a grand tour of Europe after his retirement in 1984. Juanita enjoyed sewing and embroidery, cooking for her family, her great Sunday dinners, poetry, and studying the Bible.

Juanita is survived by her two children, Mark Kelly Fleming (Linda) and Ellen Fleming-Hughes (David); and eight grandchildren, Stacey Klidzejs (Mike), Todd Kelly Fleming (Jhoma), Ashley Blake (Chris), Cameron Fleming (Vanessa), Elliott Fleming, Ethan Fleming-Hughes, Millicent Fleming-Hughes and Tim Fleming-Hughes; and 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation of family and friends will be March 13th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with the service following, with Rev. Jim Henry officiating, at Berry Highland West.

We were blessed to have many great teachers at White House HS. Mrs. Fleming was at the top of the list. I've thought of her often and so glad to know she had a wonderful life and family. We all were better for her presence in our lives.

My deepest sympathy to the Fleming family. Mrs. Fleming and I taught together at WHHS. She was so full of wisdom and advice to those of us who were young and inexperienced. I valued her friendship greatly and will miss her yearly Christmas letters, always filled with news of her family.

"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child."

I am so sad to hear this news today. I had called Mirs Fleming not long ago and even after 40+ years, all I had to say is my name, and she remembered me. We had a great conversation. I had intended to stop on a trip through Knoxville to see her. It turns out that I was in a hurry, and didn't get to stop. Now I will always regret that.

As a teacher at WHHS, she inspired me daily. She always complimented In her words both spoken and written. She was a great teacher, and person. I'm truly sorry for the loss. My prayers will be with her family.
