James “Jim” Elliott Friebele of Rockport, Texas passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was born on July 26, 1945 in Greenville, Texas.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Friebele and Loucile K. Friebele and his brother, Leary R. Friebele. He is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy L. Friebele; his son Ben (Vanessa) Friebele of Portland, Texas; his daughter Brandy (Clark) Hudson of Portland, Texas; and his cherished grandchildren Kyler Friebele, Karlee Friebele, Kinsey Friebele, Megan Hudson and Logan Hudson. He also leaves behind his sister Mayla (Jim) Comeaux of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, as well as his sister-in-law Joanna Friebele of Dublin, Texas and his loving nieces and nephews.
Jim lived a life full of adventure and purpose. He worked at NASA with Lockheed Mission Control during the 1969 Moon Landing before moving to Rockport, TX to pursue a career as a shrimper and boat captain. A passionate outdoorsman and conservationist, he dedicated much of his time to preserving the natural beauty of the Coastal Bend area. In the late 80’s, Jim became a full-time hunting and fishing guide who shared his love for the outdoors with countless others until his retirement in 2015. During this time, Jim had the honor of taking former President George H. W. Bush fishing. One of his customers and dear friend called him “Yoda” because he was a master of his craft and all that surrounded it. He was an avid birder and loved sharing this knowledge with others, including his children and grandchildren and through writing birding articles for a local publication.
Over the years he has served in many leadership roles in the Rockport community from Cub Master, Chamber of Commerce Board Member and various officer roles with the Rockport-Fulton Ducks Unlimited Chapter. He was also an active member of the Redfish Bay CCA, the Coastal Bend Guide Association, and the Audubon Society. He was also recognized for his love of saltwater fishing with an induction into the Texas Maritime Museum's Perry R. Bass Memorial Sports Fishing Wall of Fame.
Known for his good nature, quick wit, and selfless spirit, Jim was described as a mentor, pioneer, and legend by those who knew him. His warmth and humor left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 2:00 PM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 555 Enterprise Blvd, Rockport, Texas followed by a Celebration of Life to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rockport-Fulton Ducks Unlimited Chapter, Redfish Bay CCA, or the Aransas County Public Library in honor of Jim’s legacy.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and inspire others to cherish the great outdoors as he did.
