John Jenkins Obituary

Bishop - John Philip Jenkins, 71, of Bishop, GA passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2011.
A native of Winter Beach, FL, Mr. Jenkins was the son of the late John and Evelyn Floyd Jenkins. He graduated from the Naval Academy and commissioned in the Air Force attaining the rank of Captain. During his Air Force career he served in the Vietnam War flying 232 missions. His actions in combat earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. Later, Mr. Jenkins was a Captain for Delta Air Lines from 1967-1999, where he flew MD-11s. He devoted much of his life to the Christian Faith and was influential in leading others to Christ. He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church of Watkinsville, GA.
Survivors include his wife, Janie Grace Beckworth Jenkins of Bishop, GA; sons, Philip Dustyn Jenkins and wife, Crystal of Bishop, GA and John Abraham Jenkins and wife, Shelly of Bogart, GA; daughter, Hannah Grace Jenkins of Bishop, GA; sister, Marlene Midgett of Melbourne, FL, and grandchildren, Isaac Maze Jenkins, Kaden Nissen, and Elaina Grace Jenkins.
A graveside service will be held 2PM Sunday, January 23rd at Beckworth-Swinson Cemetery in Baxley, GA with military honors. Visitation will be held at the Jenkins residence, 1080 Lane Creek Terrace, Bishop, GA 30621 from 2-4PM Saturday, January 22nd.

Phil and I were in the same company at the Naval Academy. During our senior (First Class) year, we usually sat at the same table for meals and became close friends. I never saw Phil after graduation. I kept looking for him at reunions. Phil was a great guy - I'm sorry to learn of his passing. My sympathy to his family.
