Kelly Gene Johnson passed away on December 22, 2022, under care at Deaconess Hospital with his two older brothers by his side.
Kelly was born November 5, 1957, in
Colfax, WA, to Maxine and Clarence Johnson. He grew up in the small town of Oakesdale, where he enjoyed fishing with his father and brothers in the small lakes around Whitman County and steelhead fishing on the Snake River. He also enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball and basketball, which he played through high school. He graduated from Oakesdale HS and attended Washington State University where he earned a BA in Economics. He was a part of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and his fraternity brothers have always expressed their love for his sense of humor.
He then moved to
Spokane, WA, and over the years he held a position at Plum Creek Lumber Mill and later a position in maintenance at Sacred Heart Medical Center. He also enjoyed doing many odd jobs and small projects for family and friends.
One of Kelly's greatest pastimes, which brought him an abundance of joy and pleasure, was camping and fly fishing the St. Joe River in Avery, ID. Anytime he could, he would head that way and over the years he was able to take many summer trips up there with his 3 children. Many fond memories were created as he taught his children how to fly fish, watched them swim in the river, and enjoyed many nights of laughs and stories around the campfire.
Kelly's passion for sports continued into his adult life and was passed on to his kids as they grew up. He loved playing catch with the baseball or football in the backyard, a nice round of golf with his boys, and cheering on his daughter on the basketball court. His encouragement and competitive nature is something instilled in each of his kids. He would also never miss an opportunity to cheer on the WSU Cougars, Seattle Mariners, and Seattle Seahawks. He will be remembered for his friendly and relaxed personality, his ability to crack a joke at any moment, and his ease in making new friends everywhere he went.
Kelly is survived by his 3 children: Travis (Sarah) Johnson, Matthew Johnson, and Brittney (David) Petersen; his mother, Maxine Johnson; his brother Randy (Kathy) Johnson; his brother Dave (Sue) Johnson; and a large extended family. He also had many friends who we know will miss him very much. He is preceded in death by his father Clarence.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the Spring of 2023. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Kelly's life. To leave a condolence to Kelly's family, share a memory you had with Kelly, or upload a photo, please visit his obituary page through Thornhill Valley Chapel at
