After a long and noble fight against growing old, Manny passed away on August 24, 2018. There is no obituary that could do justice to his larger-than-life personality that charmed so many people.

Manny was born in Puerto Rico in 1928 and moved to New York at the age of three. He was raised in poverty, but he determined at a young age he would make something of himself despite his humble beginnings.

He enlisted in the Army as soon as he was old enough and there he learned to triumph over adversity. And triumph he did. He was successful in both his military and civilian careers. He achieved his success through his lifelong love of learning.

He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and loyal friend. He leaves behind many wonderful memories and some valuable life lessons, chief among them: Never eat fast food, but never wait for a table. Always make time to admire things of beauty whether it is nature, artwork or the people in your life. Always make time for a cup of coffee or a drink with a friend. Go ahead and talk to strangers. You meet the nicest people that way. Be a shrewd investor, but don't be afraid to gamble every now and then. Life will bring hardships so never be too proud to ask for help when you need it. When all else fails, have some ice cream and some vodka, but not necessarily in that order. Live life on your own terms. Manny lived and died on his own terms. And although his body finally grew tired and failed, his irrepressible spirit and impeccable manners never wavered. He faced some heartaches, but he would tell you life was good to him. He made the most of his 89 years on earth and will be greatly missed.

Vaya con dios, Manny. Hasta que nos veamos de nuevo.

A gathering of friends and family will be held Tuesday, September 4, from 5pm-6:30pm at Hodges Funeral Home, 525 111th Ave N, Naples, with a memorial starting at 6:30 p.m.
