I would like to thank everyone who attended Matt's memorial service. With about a 4 day notice I was in awe of the amount of honor and support you gave. I wished I could have talked to all of you but I had a job to do that day. Since then I have had some conversations with some of his friends and that has been a treasure. Some of Matt is in everyone he met and I hope it makes life that much sweeter.

Hi Gail,
I would have sent a card, but I don't have your address. I have been thinking about Matt lots during the last few weeks. I had reconnected with Matt just a week before he passed. I was visiting Denver from Fort Collins and a mutual friend mentioned that he was in Denver as well. I sent him a text to see if we could meet up, and not 15 minutes later, there he was outside the bar I was in. He had a pot roast cooking in the oven, so we couldn't talk long. We chatted for about 10 minutes, catching up on each other's lives over the past 7 years since we'd seen each other and making plans to meet up soon. Then he and Katie had to leave. Now, I live in Denver just a few miles from where we met for that last time, and every time I pass it I think of him. I know this time of year must be so painful for you, but please take comfort in remembering all the lives he touched in such a positive way. When I was having a difficult time in New Orleans, he was always there to listen and comfort me. He and I were the first to arrive in NOLA that summer, and even though I only knew him well during that time, he made a profound impact on my life. I will think of him every time I pass that spot on the sidewalk where we reconnected here in Denver and smile and think of his kindness and his endearing laugh.

I can't believe it's already been a year. Matt remains constantly in my thoughts. He was among the most important people I met at Kenyon and changed my experience there in so many ways, all for the better. He was a paradigm of kindness and openness, he was one of those cool and influential friends that somehow always brought out more of you and encouraged you to show your best self. This is how I will always remember him.

My sophomore year, Matt was a senior. We had seminars on tuesday evenings and one night we decided to skip and go get milkshakes at Southside Diner. Then we bought a six pack and sat up on top of the hill behind the BFEC drinking Pacifico and talking about life, friends and how great Kenyon was and how awesome it is to skip seminars.

I remember coming to stay with the Huber family after Matt graduated, I had such a fun time. Dr. Huber even took me driving in one of his fabulous restored cars! (It was the RoadRunner I believe) and I remember enjoying the novelty driving without power steering!

My heart goes out to all the Hubers and Katie Hickey. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope to be able to create a memorial for him at Kenyon, a few Matt's other close friends have been working with the office of alumni affairs to make that a reality.

With lots of love and hugs,
Martha Gregory

Matt and I went down to New Orleans at Kenyon in 2006. I just learned of his passing and immediately wanted to reach out to his family. He had an enormous heart and made that trip extremely memorable for so many people. I will be thinking of him and his family and sending love and light. <3

Matt was the first person I met when I got to New Orleans. Becoming his friend was easy, as he was one of the most kindhearted people I've ever met. I remember his laugh the most, and his ability to make me smile in the hardest of circumstances. I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with him in Denver for the first time since I left New Orleans, and it was like no time had gone by...
My most sincere condolences to all, and I hope that his family may find peace and comfort in knowing how dearly loved he was by so many.

I was so fortunate to work alongside Matt in New Orleans, and reconnect with him when he moved to Denver. He was kind, funny, and empathetic, and I always appreciated his ability to lighten up a difficult day when we were gutting houses. I will always remember Matt with a broad smile on his face. My deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones. He will be missed by me and the many, many others who were lucky enough to cross paths with him.

I am grateful to Matt for being an intelligent, loving, hard working and aware individual. He was an example to me, during his time in New Orleans, for how to be human.

I am hopeful that peace comes to all those who loved Matt, particularly his family at this time.

I'm so sorry to hear of Matt's passing. I knew Matt from our days in New Orleans, volunteering to help people with their homes. Matt is someone I really looked up to-- his wit, commitment to service, empathy for others. What a truly unique and selfless person. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with the Huber family at this time.
