MYLES SLOSBERG Obituary

SLOSBERG, Myles J.
Beloved Bostonian
Myles J. Slosberg, age 87, died peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis on August 31, 2024 following a lengthy illness. A proud native of Massachusetts, he was born in Cambridge on January 29, 1937, to the late Mildred (Dizon) and Charles Slosberg. He was educated at the Runkle School in Brookline, where he met a group of friends who remained close for more than 70 years; Brookline High School; Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where he earned his MBA in 1959; and Harvard Law School, where he earned his law degree 30 years later at the age of 52. In between business school and law school, Myles enjoyed a long and successful career in his family's shoe business, Stride Rite (originally known as Green Shoe). The company was founded by his grandfather, Jacob A. Slosberg in 1919 and employed thousands of Bostonians in its factory on Harrison Avenue in Roxbury over the years. Myles entered the business in 1959 and held many executive roles including President of the Stride Rite and Keds brands, President of the Sourcing Group where he expanded manufacturing internationally, and Executive Vice President of the company. He established the retail division where he opened 125 Stride Rite stores, and served on the Board of Directors from 1959 until the company's sale in 2007. In 1999 he came out of retirement to serve as CEO of Stride Rite on an interim basis and led the search for a permanent CEO. After leaving Stride Rite, Myles embarked on a second career as a practicing attorney. He was proud to be the second-oldest student in his Harvard Law School class. After passing the bar, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Rya Zobel in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He then served for eight years as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where he prosecuted organized crime cases and came to understand that the court system functions somewhat less efficiently than a major corporation such as Stride Rite. Myles was a beloved member of his community and held many leadership positions. A resident of North Falmouth since 1965, he served as President of the Bay Shores Homeowners Association for a record 27 years, during which he brought town water to the community and preserved its unique and relaxed environment. After establishing a home in Jupiter, Florida, he served as President of the Admiral's Cove Homeowners Association representing 900 homes, where he successfully led the transition to a member-run community. Myles was forever active: softball, fishing, running, skiing, boating, golfing, biking and pickleball. In his younger days, he ran the New York City Marathon; at age 85, he was a member of three different pickleball leagues. He had his pilot's license and flew his own plane. He logged thousands of miles on his bike, completing the annual Pan-Mass Challenge 27 times and finishing among the top riders for both age and fund-raising many years in a row. He got great joy out of being the captain of his boat – the "My Joy" – and fly-fishing, golfing and skiing with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a devoted Boston sports fan – Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins – and a season ticket holder for the New England Patriots since 1962. Myles leaves his loving wife, Diane Krane; children John (Audrey); Jessica Benjamin (Jim); Tom (Grace); grandchildren Grace Walters (Charlie); Charlie; Joe and Faye Benjamin; Emily and Teddy Slosberg; Asher Slosberg; great-granddaughter, Betsy Walters; stepchildren Jennifer Tarleton (Brett); Jon Krane (Gina); Jessica Krane; Justin Krane (Elnaz) and step-grandchildren Emma, Reed, Brooke and Cally Tarleton; Ella and Max Krane; Bobby and Raphy Krane. He is survived by his sister, Ellen Wright (Joe) and brother, Barry (Nurit). He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 44 years, Joyce Shemin Slosberg. Services at the Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., BROOKLINE on Tuesday, September 3 at 12:00pm. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St., Sharon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to The Jimmy Fund-PMC (The PMC - Donate) or The Charles Slosberg Scholarship Fund at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College (myTUCK - Ways to Give (dartmouth.edu)).
