Rebecca Coggins Obituary

Rebecca "Becky" Coggins

Greenville

Beloved family member and friend, consummate professional and lifelong Baptist, Rebecca L. (Becky) Coggins, age 62, of Greenville died at home Friday, May 16, 2014. She was a native of Greenville and was predeceased by her parents, Harry Edwin and Hazel Edwards Coggins.

Becky is survived by her sister, Cindy Coggins, Principal of Lake Forest Elementary School; and her uncle, Otis H. Coggins, also of Greenville; and numerous cousins.

Becky was a 1970 graduate of Wade Hampton High School. At Furman, she received a BA degree in Economics and Business Administration (cum laude) in 1974 and her Master's Degree in Business Administration in 1981. She began her career with the County of Greenville, rising to Director of Personnel. She returned to Furman University in 1984 as Director of Alumni Programs. While an accountant for Saunders and Company, she received her designation of Certified Public Accountant in 1991. She went on to work for Bradshaw, Gordon, and Clinkscales, then Elliot Davis & Company. Beginning in 1997 she participated in the inception and early days of Greenville's Bi-Lo Center. Becky founded her own accounting practice in 2001.

Throughout her professional career, Becky served the American Society of Women Accountants in many capacities. She was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Becky was in the Leadership Greenville XX class of '94, and served on the YWCA Board from 1978-83, acting as President in 1980.

Becky was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Greenville. She served in many capacities at the church, including the Internal Controls and the Finance Committees, as well as being a faithful Covenant Sunday School member.

She was an avid Furman football fan, and accompanied her dad and family to many games at Paladin Stadium. She loved her friends, her cats, car racing, ballroom dancing, the beach, Ireland, Italy, cake baking, sewing, and laughing. Becky was a true and exceptional friend.

Friends will be received on Monday, May 19, at The Mackey Mortuary on Century Drive from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. A graveside service will be held at 11 o'clock, Tuesday morning, May 20 at Woodlawn Memorial Park with the Reverend Dr. Baxter M. Wynn and Reverend Rimes McElveen officiating. Becky's close "Wild Women" friends will serve as honorary pallbearers. The First Baptist Church Covenant Sunday School Class will also serve as honorary escort.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Greenville Humane Society (305 Airport Rd

Greenville, SC 29607) or Furman University Development Office (3300 Poinsett Hwy

The family wishes to thank all family, friends, and caregivers for their many kindnesses.

Cindy, I am so shocked to only today learn of Becky's passing in the Furman magazine. Becky was the first person I would meet at Furman as I moved into the dorm, as she was my Freshman roommate and a cheerful and special person she was ! I have not been at class reunions for many years and had been planning to find her on Facebook or through Furman this Fall. So very sorry for her passing away so early. These tributes on line certainly reflect the Becky I knew.

I was so surprised to learn of Becky's death from the Furman Magazine. Becky and I met during Orientation Week our freshman year at Furman when we walked together to the swimming area on the far side of the Furman lake to take the mandatory swim test. While we were not close friends, we always enjoyed catching up with each other at class reunions. I will really miss reconnecting with her at our 40th Furman reunion next weekend. My condolences to her family.

My deepest sympathies to Becky's family and friends. Becky handled the taxes and finances for our not-for-profit corporation for the past eight years. She was a joy to work with, and nobody could have provided us with more competent or friendly help. I am grateful to have gotten to know Becky personally and will sorely miss our lively conversations, her optimism and positive outlook. She will always be shining light. Dear Cindy,
Please accept my deepest sympathy in your loss and the loss to the community. I believe I have known Becky since at least middle school through Furman and beyond. We also shared the love of ballroom dancing. My heart breaks that we had not recently seen each other. May you find comfort at this time.

For almost 25 years Becky handled our federal and state taxes. When she moved to a new job, we followed her and she kept us as clients over those many years. Becky was a true friend as well as an accomplished professional. We could count on her advice and counsel; she will be sorely missed. We had sent her a note in April after she completed our tax returns wherein we expressed our sincere appreciation for being a friend and someone we could trust and count on. We are so sorry to hear of her passing but know God has welcomed her into heaven with open arms. Please be assured of our continuing prayers during this difficult time.

Cindy, I was really sad to hear of Becky's passing. I hope that you got to experience the fun loving person that all her friends knew. I knew Becky from her days with Greenville County, the ballroom dancing, Nascar, and many fun trips and get-togethers at her home on Keith Dr. We always had this little saying that I put a little country in her and she put a little class in me. she will be sorely missed.
