Bibbins, Richard J.

Richard J Bibbins, October 18, 1921 - November 18, 2017. Richard (Dick) was born in Methuen, MA to Arthur and Lena Bibbins, one of six children. He was predeceased by his loving wife Anita, and all of his siblings. Surviving are their children: Ellen (Wilson), Richard A. (better known as Dickie), Robert (Kelly), Paul (Terri), James (Amy), and grandchildren: James, Dane, Erica, Holly, Jerilyn, Ryan, Nick, and Ethan. He is also survived by several great grandchildren. Dick Served his country in the United States Air Force from 1942-1947 as a Technical Sergeant, Communication Chief. He married Anita Swallow in June 1947 and they resided in Worcester,MA. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a BS. That same year he was hired by Link in Binghamton, NY and Binghamton became their home. Dick was a software engineering pioneer, working with a team to develop Link's first digital computer. Throughout his 36 years of service to Link, he was at the forefront of the computer age and its aerospace application. Both Dick and Anita volunteered for many years delivering "Meals on Wheels". Dick served on the Board of Directors for ARC (now Achieve) for a number of years. Dick was a long-time member of St. Catherine of Siena Church (now St Francis of Assisi) in Hillcrest where they used his talents both as a CCD instructor and a lector. He was a member of the church choir and The Holy Name Society. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, downhill skiing, and especially tennis. He was a member of Link's competitive Pistol Club. He was also a skilled auto mechanic. Dick Bibbins was a loving, giving, humble human being, a role model who led by example. His quiet ways earned him the love and respect of those who knew him and he will be greatly missed. The family would like to express much gratitude and thanks to the staff at Elizabeth Church Manor who treated Dick as family and took such good loving care of him in his final year. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 10:00 until 11:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church. A funeral mass will be at 11:00 am at the church. Burial will follow in Chenango Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers in Dick's memory, kindly consider donations to Achieve, 125 Cutler Pond Road, Binghamton, NY 13905.

dick hired me to work as a programmer on the appollo mission simulator. he gave me a great start in that field by having me get trained at the ibm education center in endicott. i never did tell him that i rolled his volvo one time as i borrowed it to go back and forth to the binghamton airport yo work on the appollo simulator. no damage as i slipped on the snow. sorry dick! a really nice guy and great person to work for.

Mr. Bibbins was such a kind, thoughtful man who served on the Board of Directors of ACHIEVE (Broome-Tioga ARC) for many years. As an employee, he always asked me about my family, complimented me on my work and assisted me at agency events. He was a quiet, caring individual who never sought recognition or accolades, but helped so many people in our community in a variety of ways. I always admired Mr. Bibbins and will remember him fondly.

We were neighbors to the Bibbins for many years and always enjoyed talking with Dick about the many things that he was conversent in. He was always willing to help out if you had a problem with your car. I always marveled at how well he could speak Italian (better than I). He will be sorely missed.

Mr Bibbins - what a true gentleman and a class act. Our paths crossed often at the CV High School tennis courts - he always had a friendly word or would hit a few with you if you didn't have a partner. He was my CCD instructor when I was in 11th grade- he really made class so meaningful and interesting. My condolences to all of the Bibbins family.
