Richard Farmer Obituary

Farmer, Richard (Dick) Gregg
Died peacefully at his home in Phoenix, Arizona on March 26, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Richard was born November 5, 1928 in Laramie, Wyoming. He graduated from Eaton (CO) High School in 1946 and immediately joined the United States Navy. His math aptitude was fostered in Fire Control School after boot camp. It was this naval training that headed Richard in the direction toward Electrical Engineering. After discharge he attended Colorado State University, earning his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1952 and later his Masters degree from Arizona State University in 1964. Richard's work experience spanned the globe. His first job was in the Digital Computer Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1957, while employed by Miner & Miner of Greeley, CO he moved his family to Beirut, Lebanon where he worked on electrifying the rural areas. In 1965 he began work at Arizona Public Service Company (APS) in Phoenix, AZ where he became the Principal Engineer until his retirement in 1994. While working at APS, he was asked by Arizona State University to teach an evening class in electric power. After retirement from APS, he increased his class load at ASU where he attained full professorship and worked until his final day. Richard was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in 2006, was named the 2010 Outstanding Power Engineering Educator by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an international organization. He was also an author/co-author of multiple Power System books and publications and a speaker at Power System conferences. Through his work, Richard inspired and educated many students and colleagues with his rich knowledge and willingness to share his expertise. But his most important accomplishment of his life was his family. He married Jo-Anne Overman in 1949 and together raised four children. Our father was the tutor, the Little League and Pop Warner coach, our biggest fan and the rock of the family. Jo-Anne passed away in 1995. Dad was blessed with additional love in his life. He married Gloria Sue Roberts on June 9, 2009. He and Sue could be seen dancing 2 or 3 nights a week at the Scottsdale American Legion up until the final month of his life. Richard lived a full, rich, and happy life to the end. Richard was preceded in death by his first wife, Jo-Anne Farmer, his parents, William Farmer and Mary Roy, and his stepfather, Jack Roy. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Sue Farmer, his children, Kristine Farmer (partner Carole Dietzel) of Phoenix, Gregg Farmer (Valerie) of Estes Park, CO, John Farmer of Phoenix, and Lee Farmer of Phoenix and his grandchildren, Taylor Farmer, Mikayla Farmer, Marcella Farmer, Meredith Donner, Ann Lambiase-Mitchell and Virginia Lambiase-Mitchell. Vistitation will be held Wednesday, March 28 from 5pm - 8pm at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85257. Internment in Eaton, Colorado on Tuesday, April 2. Richard became my brother just recently when he married my sister, Sue. Plans for a trip to Washington DC (Dick to present a paper at his professioal society meeting and then to visit our "little mountains" in West Virginia) were interrupted with illness. Dick was that way with each person he met -- he showed a genuine interest in your life and quickly became a friend to each of us - family members, students and peers. We will each miss him for his meek, gentle spirit. We will remember how he lived his Christian faith by showing his grace through word and deed in his daily life, in his relationships and responsibilities. I'm glad he shared his interest in music with me. We each wanted more time with Richard and that will be a part of his legacy. If only we would emulate him, this world could be a better place.

Carol and I were saddened to hear of Richard's passing from this life to our eternal home and we look forward to re-uniting with him some day. Carol and I really enjoyed our first meeting Richard jsut prior to my Mom's funeral (2009) in Scotsdale. Richard was so very friendly, considerate, and helpful to us. Soon afterward he married my sister, Sue, and their precious years together were very special and rewarding in many ways. I am so thankful that Richard and Sue shared true happiness and embraced the zest for life through their travels and activities, especially dancing often to "Waltz across Texas with Me". We miss not being able to hear his voice on the phone and understand that he is greatly missed by Sue, his many friends, and his wonderful family.

With Love, Bill and Carol Lee Billups

I did not learn about this until the day after the visitation. I worked with Dick until I retired in 1984 and considered him to be the best Engineer and all around good person. Harold Taylor

Dick and I were great high school friends. We always had fun playing together on the Eaton Reds football and basketball teams. I'll never forget those days, and send my deepest sympathy to his family!

Throughout my academic career, Professor Farmer was the best teacher/instructor I ever had. Professor Farmer was obviously very intelligent and obviously knew what he was talking about, yet he was never arrogant or condescending. While knowledge of the subject is very important, what made Prof Farmer standout was his apparent love for teaching and his approachability. Prof Farmer would stay late after class until all the student questions were answered. If further research was necessary, Prof Farmer always followed up and got back to us. Prof Farmer even gave out his phone number and allowed us to call him at home.
It was Prof Farmer's dedication and his teaching 'style' that influenced me to pursue Power Engineering. I have a great deal of respect for Prof Farmer. He was always eager to help students understand the concepts at hand, and he always seemed eager to share his love for the power field.
I will miss him dearly. Please accept our prayers for your family.

I am very sorry to learn of Dick's passing. I worked with him on IEEE Committees for many years and have always had the greatest respect for him, both as an engineer and as a human being. My condolences to Sue and the rest of Dick's family.

Dick was a great mentor to me as a young power engineer especially in the arena of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, later the IEEE Power & Energy Society. I attended our meetings with Dick without missing from at least 1998 to 2009 (plus several from 1988 to 1997 but not in succesion), for which I seem to recall neither of us missed such an event till I could not attend in 2010 (But Dick was there!!!). To Dick's family, please know he touched so many lives in his chosen career. We will dearly miss him in the IEEE Power & Energy community. Please accept my families prayers for you and your's at this time of your loss.

Dick Farmer and I were colleagues at ASU and APS from 1970 to 1980. His great talent was betrayed only by his accomplishments. His modest mentoring provided only insight and encouragement to others. He was greatly respected and admired and will be sorely missed. Demosthenes P. Gelopulos

I am greatly saddened to learn of Dick's death. He had a special place in my professional life and I will always be greatful that he nominated me to be a Fellow of the IEEE.

Our professional relationship began when Westinghouse Electric appointed Lee Kilgore Ed Taylor and me to work with Dick, representing Arizona Public Service, Arnie Schwalb, representing the Salt River Project and Eli Katz, representing the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to investigate and find solutions to a phenomena that threatened the use of series capacitors to enhance AC power transmission over long diatances, The development of analysis methods and solutions to interactions known as subsynchronous resonance occupied this team and many others in the Power Industry for more than 5 years in the mid 1970s. Dick was instrumental in working with the IEEE to provide technical forums and disseminate technical information to assist the industry. He and his company developed simplified techniques to determine generating plants that had greatest risk and freely shared their methods with utilities throughout the world.

On a personal note, Dick and I discovered that his uncle had owned a farm that adjoined my Father's farm in Colorado during the years when I was growing up. Both Dick and I received our BSEE degrees from Colorado State University. I have always been proud of our friendship wnd will miss Dick greatly.

My condolences to his family and friends.
