Steven Owens Obituary

Steven Newman Owens

SHREVEPORT, LA - On January 16, 2014, the good Lord welcomed Steve into His heavenly kingdom following a lengthy illness. Steve was born on November 14, 1947 in Monroe, LA to his parents Ann and Bill Owens. He graduated from Byrd High School in 1965. Steve served honorably for the US Army as a Paratrooper for two years. Steve had a real passion for three things in life: religion, family, and baseball. He enjoyed reading the bible. He loved to gather his friends and family around and have discussions on a variety of topics. His favorite question to bring up was, "Who is the greatest baseball player to ever play?" These debates would last for hours. He would always finish with "The Babe." His love for the game and his passion to visit with family can be summed up by The Babe, "Every strike brings me closer to the next homerun."

He is preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 23 years, Debbie Owens. He is survived by his parents, Ann and Bill Owens; three sons: Stevie Owens and wife Roberta , Fellers Owens and fiancé Sonya Reyes, and Nathan Owens, along with two daughters, Katy Owens Pierce and husband Jon, and Annette D'Armada; sister Cammie Laborde and husband Chuck , brother, Kent Owens and wife Susie; five grandchildren: Brenner, Brittany, Corbin, Peyton, and Trenton; three nephews and one niece: Trey, Matt, Will and Ashley, along with many grand-nieces and nephews. The family would also like to recognize some of Steve's lifelong friends who had been there by his side: Martha-Anne, Nancy, Morgan & Mary, Decker, and Doug. You are all angels to us.

"Pop's, you have hit a homerun in all of our hearts." Guys, sweet dreams.

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4: 17-18 NIV

There will be a memorial service for Steve Owens at St. Matthias Episcopal Church Monday, January 20th beginning at 11am with reception to follow located at 3301 St. Matthias Drive in Shreveport.

I'm sorry I'm just now hearing about my friend. Steve, come on, Mickey Mantle was the best! how many times have we argued this point. I'll miss you my friend. Remember the time we were walking down the aisle of Broadmoor Theater during "Blue Hawaii" looking for the ladies.....I know....and no one else will!

I haven't seen Steve since shortly after high school. You just couldn't help but like Steve. So good to know how his life turned out with such a lovely family and knowing the Lord. I always thought he had the greatest parents and sister! God bless all of you with peace and strength as you walk through this great loss. Always remember that smile!

My condolences to the family. I knew Steve from the 1st grade at Werner Park Elementary and at Summer Grove Elementary when we were in Mrs. McFaul's 6th grade class when we were also teammates on the Brookwood Braves little league team. Steve was our second baseman and a very good one. His love of baseball began there. His favorite team was the L.A. Dodgers which he never stopped talking about. Lost track of him when his family moved away from our school districts just before we entered the 7th grade. He was a good guy and I have a lot of good memories of our friendship. One you would enjoy was when Cammie gave us a "tutorial" on how to dance...we were only 12, but Steve was really excited about learning, obviously to impress the girls. I'll remember him for all the good times we had. God bless his family.

Steve laughed out loud one time when a group of us had been out riding around town with no particular place to go, and when we were getting dropped off at our houses, I announced that I lived in the attic fan district. I will miss him.

I'm sorry to hear about Steve's passing. We played together when we attended Summer Grove Elementary back in the 1950's. We loved playing baseball together. I lost track of Steve when he went to junior high but always remembered him.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Steven Newman Owens our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Steve. And to Steve it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Vietnam War while serving in the U.S. Army. Steve, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Steve's family and loved ones.
