ELLEN SCHWARTZ Obituary

SCHWARTZ--Ellen Kay. Ellen Kay Schwartz of New York, NY died Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at home with her loving husband, Edward M. Spiro, of 38 years by her side. Ellen was born in NYC on Jan. 23, 1952, graduated from Hunter College H.S., Vassar and Boston University School of Law, where she met her husband, Ed. A staunch believer in both public service and the need for fair application of the law to all, Ellen served as an attorney for the Legal Aid Society, Inspector General for various NYC agencies, an Asst. Deputy Commissioner for the NYPD, and the Head of Internal Affairs for the Baltimore Police Dept. For the last eight years, Ellen served the people of the State of New York, first as Executive Deputy Chief of Staff in the Attorney General's Office and then as Assistant Executive Deputy Secretary to the Governor.

But no people in New York were better served by Ellen than her family. In addition to being a loving mother to her daughter, Sara (Spiro) Abramson, and son, Matthew H. Spiro, she was a wonderful mother-in-law to her children's respective spouses, Brett and Eileen, a loving and doting grandmother to Ilana and Vivian Abramson, supportive sister to Chuck Schwartz, and a caring daughter to Shirley Dinitz and Murray Schwartz and step-daughter to Leon Dinitz. Beyond her immediate family, Ellen was the core of her extended family, hosting large holiday dinners over the years that will be remembered fondly by all. Services will be held on Friday, June 19 at 11am at Central Synagogue, 652 Lexington Ave., New York, NY.

I think of Ellen often and remember our long friendship and I so miss picking up the phone and talking to her and making plans to get together . I miss her advice, her wit and sense of humor. We met in 1977 when we were Legal Aid lawyers and we connected immediately. We were office mates and colleagues. We worked together , laughed together and sometimes cried together. We were ther for the milestones in each others lives. I was lucky that Ellen touched my life .

I met Ellen in 1977 and we became office mates at Legal Aid where we were both criminal defense attorneys. Ellen was an excellent and committed lawyer and a devoted friend to me. We shared many wonderful times together and I still want to pick up the phone and call her. She was remembered a few weeks ago at a Legal Aid Reunion of defense lawyers who were there in the 1970s . Ellen would have loved to be there. I miss Ellens wit, humor and her advice which was always right on .I am happy we touched each others lives and and just wish we had more years of friendship

What a great woman. She always had a reserved, yet shy way about her, even though she held a very big title!

Ed, Sara, Matthew, Aunt Rita and family
So deeply sorry for your loss. Steve was there today and shared the wonderful words that the Cantor/Rabbi shared about Ellen being a Proverbs 31 woman. I have shivers just thinking of the words. How the Cantor sang "Crazy Love". How true those words vibrate Ellen's wonderful life.
For me, Ellen, was a beautiful women of strength. I remember when we were invited to your apartment in Grammercy Park and we came and sat for Seder at your home. What a special time with family, She was such a wonderful hostess. I even learned a few things to carry on into my life by attending those special times. She was always very quiet when it came to her many outstanding positions that she held. I really admired her for all those wonderful accomplishments. I will truly miss her. Love Elizabeth Spiro

Fordham Law School sends our deepest condolences to the family. Ellen played a critical role in launching a fellowship program designed to attract the new generation of public interest lawyers into state government service. We all so appreciated her commitment to that mission, her responsiveness, candor, and sense of humor.
