Dmytro Kecman Obituary

Kecman, Dmytro

Binghamton: Dmytro Kecman, 84, of Binghamton, passed away into the Arms of the Lord, on January 14, 2014 at Lourdes Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Ivan and Maria and is survived by many family members in Ukraine, including his three beloved nephews, Dmytro, Wasyl, Yuriy, and their families. Dmytro was born in Loweja, Ukraine on November 3, 1929. He came to America from a refugee camp as a teenager and enlisted in the United States Army where he served as Sergeant First Class during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and went on to work at CAE Link for 39 years. Dmytro was a long time member of the former Holy Name Society and was secretary of our local chapter of the Providence Association. Most notably, Dmytro was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church. His whole life centered around his beloved church. He was the first to come before liturgies started, to make sure all was in place and the last to leave. He gave all his time to volunteering, from playing St. Nicholas for many years at our annual play, to being the "Fish Man" at our weekly Friday dinners. He was a quiet man who loved being with his parish family and missed working with them when his health no longer allowed him to. He will always be fondly remembered. His friends would like to thank the staff at Castle Gardens Senior Living Center for their kindness toward him during this last year and a half that he lived there. It truly became his home. Funeral Services will be held 8:30AM on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Laskowski Funeral Home and at 9:00AM at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, 230 Ukrainian Hill Rd., Johnson City, where Rev. Teodor B. Czabala Jr. will recite The Divine Liturgy. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, Castle Creek. Friends will be received at the Funeral Home on Sunday, from 3 to 6 p.m. Rev. Czabala will hold a Parastas (Prayer Service) at 5 p.m. Donations may be made in Dmytro's memory to Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church Building Fund.

My parents (of Ukrainian descent), Dymetro and Eva, ate at the Sacred Heart dinners most Fridays. He was always very nice to us. It was a memorable day when he and others of the kitchen staff sang birthday greetings to my mother in their language. Now they all listen to a choir of angels.
