So sorry to hear of George Akel's passing. Some of us have been where Sally and her family are right now. It is a sad spot that never really goes away. My thoughts are with you and I share your sorrow. Doris Lawton.

I grew up knowing the Akel families through the Giant, my parents and brothers aunt aunt and uncle worked at the Giant. They are a great family and George will be missed, he was a dear man. He came to both my parents funerals and that meant a lot to me and my family. My deepest sympathies to Andrea and her family. I never met her but talked to her several times on the phone. She is a dear person just as her father was. The Akel legacy will live on forever through his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. My prayers are with you all.

I believe that George today might say to all of us: Surrender the fight, the struggle, the demand for things making sense...
Find that pure, devotional space in your heart, the place of your original innocence, that knows exactly how to surrender and trust the current your life AND ministry/leadership is taking. CHANGE IS ALWAYS FOR EVOLUTION. Change is always in support of greater stability. I was blessed to be in town for the service and celebration of his life.
I want to thank the Akel Family for their generosity and work in planning the church service, gathering and meal afterward and to thank the staff there. I truly respected and loved George for his deep deep caring of others.

Dear Sally and family, Bill and I were saddened when we learned of George's passing. We, like so many others, will remember his kindness and fairness to us in business as well as his friendship in later years. He was a true gentleman whose kindness and honesty was reflected in everything he did. Binghamton, NY is a better place for having had him live, work and play in it. He will be missed. May God grant him Memory Eternal and to you and your family peace in the coming months as you go forward. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I am saddened by the loss of such a grand and caring friend. He loved his family and his community and revered and served them both every day of his life. George was in my graduating class at Central, June '53. He was the smartest guy in our class. We connected again in 2010 when he served on my committee to promote the book I wrote about growing up in Binghamton during WW II. He was a magnificent human being, the likes our hometown will never see again. What a treasure...what a loss.
Our Love to his wife and children and prayers to the Akel Family.
