Richard Burton Obituary
1940 ~ 2020
Heber, UT—Richard R. ("Dick") Burton, distinguished Utah photographer and philanthropist, died December 29, 2020 after a fall in his home. Dick was born on February 8, 1940, to R. Harold Burton and Maybelle Covey Burton, both of Salt Lake City.
Dick graduated from the University of Utah Business College. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. After college, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves in the Medical Evacuation Corps., and was activated to respond to the Berlin Crisis. Returning to Salt Lake, Dick married Susan "Timmy" Dinwoody, his beloved partner in life, on June 30, 1962. Timmy preceded him in death on July 6, 2018.
Dick began his career at the investment division of First Security Bank, but photography soon became his passion and life-long endeavor. He studied photography at UCLA, and later taught photography at Utah State University and the Salt Lake Art Center. He was never happier than when hiking and taking photographs in the Uinta Mountains.
Dick served as a Director of the R. Harold Burton Foundation for many years. Later, he and Timmy established the Dick and Timmy Burton Foundation to give back the to the Utah community.
Dick had an amazingly diverse and adventurous life. He was an accomplished skier and mountain climber. He raced motorcycles and loved piloting his Cessna and Piper Cub aircraft around the western states. Dick was a consummate artist; the images he captured with his camera were simply magical. He had a keen intellect and a dry wit. He treated everyone with respect, regardless of their social or economic status.
Dick is survived by brother Dan H. Burton of Scottsdale, Arizona and sister Judith Burton Moyle of Park City, Utah. Special thanks to Diane and Hilton Hauter and Susie Smith for their great help to Timmy and Dick and for care of several properties over many years. Due to Covid, there is no service currently planned. According to his wishes, Dick will be cremated, and his ashes buried next to Timmy's in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. If anyone is so inclined, please consider making a donation in Dick's honor to the Natural History Museum of Utah, the University of Utah College of Nursing, or the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah.

Dick and Timmy were the kindest people you could ever meet, so loving, kind and very generous!! They gave unconditionally, silently without recognition, to so many good causes!!! They never treated anyone unkind and gave their all to any project or cause that they loved!! They were both so fun to visit and had so many interesting stories to tell! Gordon worked with Hugh as carpenters for Dick & Timmy for many years!! Dick and Timmy were like family to us and we will miss their sweet spirits so very much!!! They are together again!!!

I feel so fortunate to have met Dick. He and Timmy did so much for our museum and, in our department, we enjoyed their visits immensely. They were a special part of our museum family and we will miss Dick, as we miss Timmy, so very much.
