SIEGFRIED HALUS Obituary

SIEGFRIED MAXIMILIAN HALUS, APRIL 8, 1943 - MARCH 27, 2018. Siegfried Halus died after a short illness in Santa Fe, NM, at the age of 74. Born in Salzburg, Austria, Siegfried immigrated with his family to the United States in the early 1950s. He grew up in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia and studied sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, receiving his BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from the Hartford Art School. A renowned contemporary fine arts photographer, Siegfried taught at the University of Hartford Art School, the University of Connecticut (Storrs) School of Fine Arts, and Tufts University/The Boston Museum School. After moving to Santa Fe in 1990 he taught photography at the Institute of American Indian Art and served as chair of the visual and performing arts division at Santa Fe Community College, where he oversaw planning and completion of the Fine Arts Complex. Siegfried was a 2005 recipient of the City of Santa Fe Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, for "dedication to the visual arts." He is the author of numerous photographic books, including Living Shrines: Home Altars of New Mexico, with Marie Romero Cash (Museum of New Mexico Press) and In Search of Dominguez & Escalante: Photographing the 1776 Spanish Expedition Through the Southwest, with Greg Mac Gregor (UNM Press). His photographs are in private and museum collections around the world. His most recent exhibition was a one-man show at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York City in January - February 2018. Siegfried Halus is survived by his son, Maximilian O'Donnell Halus of Cambridge, MA; his sisters Stefanie Tashjian (Donald) and Erika Chisholm Edmands (Geoffrey), and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A beloved teacher and mentor, Siegfried is also survived by countless students, collaborators, and close friends. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

An intense, yet loving man. Artist advocate, activist and a prolific artist. Im fortunate to have collaborated with him in Hartford, Connecticut back in the 1970s.
The universe is richer with him back.

I am sorry to hear of Sigfried's passing. He will be missed. He was one of myfavorite professors at Tufts ( a few years ago).

I am so sadden to learn of Siegfried's passing and so sorry for our collective loss. We bonded while I was a photography student at SMFA/Tufts (1979) and we once taught side-by-side at Tufts in 1982. My first excursion to the enchanted New Mexico was with Siegfried as our photographic tour leader for 12 art students. He clearly loved the landscape and culture so well. On subsequent trips to NM, he introduced me to some of his students at both the American Indian School and the SFCC.

We last spoke this past winter and I regret not being able to make his show in NYC or follow through with a spring break trip to NM. During my first year in graduate school, my major advisor, Billy Parker (Siegfried's close friend and mentor) gave me a copy of a letter of recommendation Siegfried had written on my behalf. It was so beautifully crafted as many may not know of his skills as a writer in addition to the beautiful pictures he captured. Reading the letter, I could so appreciate the depth of his friendship and his thorough knowledge of my work. Siegfried possessed great empathy and love. The news of his passing truly breaks my heart.

My condolences. I have lost a friend, but we all have lost an inspiring teacher and an advocate. I met Siegfried in a temporary building on the SFCC college campus. In a temporary building because Siegfried was building the visual arts complex which should stand in his memory. His guiding me and encouragement will not be forgotten, by me, by other students and by our community

So so sad to hear about Siegfried's passing. And so grateful at the same time that I was able to spend time with him the last 3 times I went to Santa Fe, more than 30 years after having had the chance to follow photo classes with him at Tufts. He was an amazing human being and teacher and friend.
Sincere condolences to Max who was born while I was at Tufts and to the whole family. You were lucky to have him in your life. Love and light to all.
Would love to discuss with family about him and his work of it is possible.

My condolences, Max and the family. Siegfried was a dear friend and I was shocked and saddened to hear of his death. He was a prodigy as a sculptor, completing a life-size sculpture of his friend Julio when still in high school. We used to go to Fleisher in the evenings to do 2-hour figure studies under the instruction of Papa Renzetti and sometimes Frank Gasparo (who designed the reverse of the Lincoln Penny). We spent many hours in my studio on Sansom street and roaming the streets and museums of Philadelphia. He will be sorely missed.
