Alfred Copp Obituary

EXETER — Alfred L. "Al" Copp, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, in Exeter Hospital after a courageous battle with failing health.

He was born March 3, 1924, in Daytona, Fla., the son of the late Harold R. and Alice C. (Garside) Copp. He was raised and spent his life in Exeter.

Mr. Copp began his professional photography studio in Exeter to follow his lifelong passion.

He is survived by seven children, Julie Carr of Epping, Robin Currier of Brentwood, Brenda Babylon of East Hampstead, Blaine Copp of Hampton, Lynne Copp of Raymond, and Lisa Roy and Larry Copp, both of Exeter; three stepchildren, William Tappan of New Castle, Richard Tappan of Dover and Barbara Colvin of Alabama; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles S. Copp of Westbrook, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two wives, Rita (Bean) Copp and Eunice (DeWolfe) Copp; and one sister, Shirley Sturtevant.

WE REMEMBER: He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant on the front lines with the 86th Regiment Company G, 10th Mountain Division, and was the recipient of a Purple Heart.

He was a 1947 graduate of Dover High School and then re-enlisted into the Army in 1948 during peacetime, where he worked as a motion picture cameraman and instructed military personnel in motion picturing for training and intelligence purposes. He worked for King's Chevrolet for more than 30 years and retired as a warranty manager.

Mr. Copp was a life member and Past Chaplain of the American Legion Post No. 32 of Exeter; a life member, Past Commander, and Past Chaplain of the Disabled American Veterans, Squamscott Chapter No. 13 of Exeter; member and Past Chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2181 of Exeter; life member of the National Rifle Association; active member, Past Deacon, and choir member of the First Baptist Church of Exeter since 1934; and former Boy Scout.

After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering his time visiting with ill veterans at veteran facilities in Manchester and local areas. He always liked to tinker with anything that needed fixing, and there was always photography.

Thoughts and prayers to the family. I met "Mr. Copp" as a child at Deke Zoffoli's olds garage. My father was a great friend of the Zoffoli families. Our first pick-up truck was one that Deke had used on the lot for moving other vehicles. He and my dad shared many honorable stroies. He will be sadly missed.

I met Al in March of '67. He worked for Zoffoli Olds. We met many other times at King Chevy/Olds. I knew Eunice as well. I worked in an art store in Portsmouth. I was glad to wait on her hand and foot as he had done so many times for me. He was a friend to all.

Julie,
My sincerest sympathy at the loss of your father. I have many fond memories of visits to your house as childhood friends. Your parents always made me feel welcome and part of the family. The love and generosity they instilled in all of you is to be commended. It is never easy to lose a loving family member and your father was indeed that. May the many fond memories you have help you get through this very difficult time.
He will indeed be missed by the many friends and family whose lives he has touched.
With love and sympathy

Dad, though not my biological father, has been my dad all my life. He always treated Brenda and me the same as all of his children and loved us as his own. Dad gave me endless piggy back rides when I hurt my foot as a small child. He taught me to ride a bike and held my hand at the dentist office. When I left for Spain as a new bride, Dad suffered my leaving - despite the fact that there were still six kids left at home. He rejoiced upon hearing the news that his first grandchild, my daughter Colleen, had been born and again when another set of "Twinks", my daughters Erin and Erica were born into the family. Dad's gifts and lessons to us were many, and he has left us a legacy of love and family that will never be broken. Thank you, Dad. I love you.

My sister Julie and I lost our natural father when we were very small children. Our mother, Rita, married Dad a couple of years later, almost 49 years ago, and I can say, without reservation, that we couldn't have asked for a better father than Al Copp. We were never treated any differently than any of his other children who would be yet to come. We were simply "his kids", and he loved us all the same. The wonderful memories of my life as Dad's daughter are far too numerous to count, and he will live on in my heart and my memory to the end of my days. I am eternally grateful for all that he was and all the love he showed. May he sleep peacefully with the angels. I love you, Dad, and I'll miss you far more than I can say.

My Dad: I could not have asked for a better father. He was a strong, kind, generous man who loved to help other people. I am so proud to have called him my Dad..He taught us that God, family and friends are so important in life and also to live each day as if it was your last. He always told us that even though we didn't have a real lot of money, he said that he felt that he was the richest man in the world to have the love of his children and we have always felt the same way about him. He taught us to stand up for what we believe in and to treat other people as we would want to be treated. I will love him and miss him always and I will continue to instill in my daughter the same beliefs and values that he instilled in all of his children. "I love you Daddy"......Lynne

Al Copp was one of the nicest people I knew, he had such a great love for his family. He spoke at my uncle Charlie Call's memorial service and shared memories of when they were young. My deepest sympathy is with the Copp family at this time. God bless Al.

I have never known antoher man like my Dad. He fought so hard throughout his life and right up to the moment he passed. He loved us kids so much and I am blessed to have had him as my father. I will miss him more than I can say but I have the most wonderful memories to carry me through. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone that touched his life. I think we are all better people for having had him in our lives.

No one fought a more courageous battle for life than my Dad. He was a lover of nature, animals large & small but most of all his family. He was a formidable force that will be sorely missed but never, ever forgotten. Love Robin (Copp) Currier
