Kenneth Moynihan Obituary

Kenneth J. Moynihan

PAXTON - Kenneth J. Moynihan, respected historian, columnist, and author, died on January 10, 2014 in the arms of his loving wife with family and his friends at his bedside. Although he lived with Parkinson's disease for fourteen years he showed glimpses of his keen intellect and sense of humor even as the disease progressed.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary Jo (Brennan Nadeau) and daughters, Connie Nadeau and partner Eric DeCoster, Mary Beth and husband Adrian LaVoie, and Jolayne Nadeau. He is also survived by granddaughter, Brennan LaVoie and grandson, Conrad LaVoie and was predeceased by his granddaughter, Jolayne Nadeau (Little Jo) who he called his "hero". He was also predeceased by his older brother, Jack and is survived by his brothers, Bob and wife Mary, Wayne and wife Claudette, Dan and wife Debbie, Paul and wife Dona Lynn, Mark and Patrick and his sister Ann Theroux.

Ken was the son of John and Claire (O'Connell) Moynihan. He was born July 27, 1944 and raised in New Hampshire. At age fourteen he came to Worcester to attend Assumption Prep. He fell in love with Worcester and never left his adopted home.

He attended The College of the Holy Cross where he studied history, edited the school paper, and developed his love of politics. After graduating, he attended Clark University, earning a Ph.D. in History in 1972.

Ken began his academic career at Assumption College where he taught history, including a popular course in African-American History. He wrote two books, The History of Assumption College and A History of Worcester 1674-1848. He founded the Worcester History Group and was a fellow at the Worcester Antiquarian Society. Ken was at Assumption College for over 30 years, serving as the chair of the History Department for 20 years. He was awarded the President's Medal when he retired.

Ken loved politics. He was active in the Democratic Party, supporting and advising candidates at the state and local levels. He was most proud to be a George McGovern delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He was also involved in non-partisan politics. Ken chaired the Citizen's Plan E Association, overseeing their candidate process and regularly attending City Council meetings.

Ken was a successful newspaper columnist for Worcester Magazine and later the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. He wrote thoughtful, honest and occasionally tough commentary, prompting one local judge to call him "the conscience of Worcester County".

The love of his life was his wife Mary Jo. Their home in Paxton was a "perpetual open house" where they hosted family, friends, and students. Mary Jo cooked while Ken led lively discussions and played the piano. Ken was a gentleman farmer, caring for animals large and small and a gardener extraordinaire.

In keeping with Ken's generous spirit the family has donated his body to the UMass Medical School for research and education.

A memorial service will held at the Holy Spirit Chapel at Assumption College, Worcester, MA at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, and PO Box 4777, NY, NY 10163-47777

Not sure what to say?

January 21, 2014

Professor Moynihan was one of the best professors I had at Assumption. I took his Civil Rights colloqium class and it was by far the most memorable. We were a small group of about five students who met weekly at a round table, discussing the readings in-depth and strengthening our opinions with his guidance. He got us fired up about the topics, making us want to learn more. I could tell as a student that he was passionate about teaching and cared deeply about keeping us engaged, talking to us like we were his colleagues. I am sorry to hear about his passing and know he is fondly remembered by many Assumption students. -Emilie Clucas, Class of 2006

Prof. Moynihan will always be remembered as one of my favorite professors at Assumption. I still speak about him often and his wonderful humor and positive attitude. I'll never forget the first day of class he came right out with a joke about his hands shaking due to his Parkinson's and had us all laughing. He never let his sickness get in the way of doing what he loved and helping us learn. I wish everyone can have a teacher like him at least once in their lifetime. He will be greatly missed.

To Ken's family, I attended Assumptions from 1973 to 1977, graduating with a degree in history. Ken was the most influential professor that I had during my time at Assumption College. I think that I took every course that he taught in those years. He taught history in a way that taught us to deal with primary source materials and he taught us to think critically about what we read. Ken's method of teaching and his obvious love of the material served me exceptionally well in law school, turned me into an American History devotee and , after taking his class on Thomas Jefferson, has caused me to continue to read every book on Jefferson that I can get my hands on. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing and send you all my deepest sympathy. Michael MacDonald, Class of 1977

As a classmate of Ken's at the prep I remember him as a very bright, caring person. He was our class president and carried that responsibility with him through his life. Ken will be missed by all members of the 1962 Assumption Prep class. Rest in peace my friend.

Ken Moynihan: gentleman, teacher, host. I am so grateful that we could "do lunch" together these last years, and I'm very sorry to miss his Mass, but am away from home for the moment. I'm so grateful to him and to you, Mary Jo. I I will remember him with real fondness and great respect. Worcester is a little less than it was. Peace, Sr. Nuala Cotter, R.A.

Oh my what to say. First I am SO glad you, Mary Jo, came into Ken's life. YOU were always one of the first Christmas cards I received! I always knew what a wonderful life you and Ken were having. You were both so blessed.

I remember the earlier Ken - the early 70's Professor Moynihan. I could NEVER turn in a paper that he didn't find a typo! Once he walked out of the classroom because no one talked - he wanted participation but none of us had been taught how - we just sat there saying "did that just happened"! And then there was my senior year seminar - Salem Witch Craft. It was fabulous and yes Ken hosted all of us at his house! We dissected all the facts and came up with the why's of it all.

History was my major. Ken made History come alive. Wow - the best years ever, best Professor ever!

He will never be forgotten.

As a fellow student in most of Ken's classes at Assumption Prep, I have very vivid memories of a popular and gifted young man who was destined to make an impact with his life. It is with great sadness that I learned of Ken's passing, and am grateful that we saw each other last year in an unanticipated class reunion. Mary Jo, you're loving care for Ken was inspirational, and Liz and I extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Professor Moyniham was one of my favorite history professors at Assumption. You could tell he really loved his students being around "young people" all day long, even when we wanted to discuss Saved by the Bell before class started. I still remember my first day in his class and he told us "My wife told me to tell you all I have Parkenson's so you don't think I have a drinking problem". Made us all laugh and made everyone feel comfortable as well. Great professor who will be missed.

Ken was a 20th century renaissance man, born centuries too late and taken decades too soon. A true New Englander, Ken is missed by those of us who knew and loved him, and admired by all for his many rare gifts, including his unconditional generosity, an unflappable good nature, his immutable honesty, and a personal philosophy that easily survived careful scrutiny. Rare attributes indeed. We miss you Ken.

Ken was a truly loving and beloved man. He was a true mentor , nurturing so many throughout his life. We will cherish the many memories-him helping Little Jo ride a horse, in deep discussion with Chris over the specifics of written word and its philosophy, and this past Christmas season, smiling from his reading chair as he ate pizza and cheered Mary Jo as she trounced us all in Whist-to name a few. Mary Jo, we could all see you were both blessed to have this love and know that though he will be sorely missed, you can take comfort in knowing how Ken and his memory touched us all.
All our love,
Barbara Benincaso, Chris and Camille Kopacz

Mary Jo and family: I remember Ken,a Holy Cross classmate, as both a stand-out and stand-up guy. He had a lively intellect, a passion for history and politics, a keen interest in the world around him, a well-practiced sense of humor, and a generous outlook on mankind. It is clear that the positive qualities of Ken's youth endured throughout his full, productive life. He was a man of great character and accomplishment.
