1950 - 2021
Pheoris West, age 70, passed away January 23, 2021. Arrangement entrusted to Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Home, 720 E. Long St., where a walk through viewing will take place at 9am on Feb. 6. Followed by a short service at 10:30am. Services will be live streamed online to allow family and friends to honor Pheoris. He will be interred at Eastlawn Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his father James West, brother John West, son Adwin West. He is survived by his wife, Michele Hoff West; children, Jahlani, Pheannah, and Adji West; mother, Mary McDowell; brother, James West; sisters, Cercie Olatunji, Constance West; grandchildren, Adjyannah West, Keenan and Kohen West, Kadin West, Jasiah, West; and a number of cousins, Aunts, Uncles, nieces and nephews.

I am proud to say that Pheoris was my Mentor, Teacher, and Friend. Like many of his students, he affirmed my artistic vision and challenged me to be my true and authentic self. My fondest memories of Pheoris were those moments that we shared on the golf course where he taught me some of the most important life lessons. Rest well Shape-Shifter, enter that ancestral dimensional plane that you so beautifully articulated in your work. To Michele and the family thank you for teaching us what true love is. You are ever present in our prayers.

His story about eating with his left hand...had Heidi and me laughing so hard I cried. Pheoris was of the best combinations; humor and profound wisdom, an example of abundant curiosity and tremendous work ethic, giving and grateful. Thank you, West family for sharing him with us and doing all the work it takes to love with tenderness and joy when giving up in not an option. Always is love.

Pheoris was my friend and my colleague in art and teaching. The electric energy and joy he brought to his art, his teaching, his friends, will remain with us forever. One of God's greatest wonders has left this earth. Never in my lifetime will I get to know and cherish someone like this again. I have known Pheoris for almost 40 years and he has left memories with me that will last forever. RIP my mentor and friend all my love you will be missed

Words can not say how sorry I am to hear of Pheoris's death or Pheor as we called him. We both started at OSU together,he a teacher,I a student. I had him for three years for various classes and I still can't start a painting without hearing his words. Not only was he a great teacher but he cared about you personally. He once commented I looked like I was losing weight and that was a big deal to a person like me who was so self concious and self depricating. The world has lost a great artist and human being. Prayers for peace for the family.
