Dr. Kolb is hands down the most positive and influential person in my life to date. She could home into hidden talents and even faults and have them blossom into astonishing achievements. She was my French professor but more like the mom I needed. She was truly great. I moved to France in 2007 with my daughter, my B.A in French, and 4 suitcases. But in one of those suitcases was an old French Larousse dictionary she gave me for graduation. She said something like "It's for the girl who hated my dictionary assignments because she took hours doing them because she would become distracted reading the dictionary." She couldn't have chosen a more suitable and thoughtful gift. I found this sad news trying to look her up again and let her know I finally got the job exporting wine and spirits where I get to make my living speaking French with all of the French wine and distilleries in France. It's small compared to how much she accomplished in her lifetime, but it was my 20 year old dream and I wouldn't have ever accomplished it without her guidance, wisdom and patience. I will always miss her and cherish her memory.

I am a second cousin who met Kathy late in life. The Kolb family business is scholarship, so I read one of Kathy's late essays on Berlioz and, at a layman's level, could engage and enjoy it. That is due entirely to Kathy's lucid and generous writing style that made esoteric facts and ideas accessible.

Kathy was a colleague, an enthusiast for Berlioz and everybody, and a friend and companion to everyone, no matter the distance or proximity. That she will be missed is an understatement. Olav ha-Shalom.

I was Kathy and Basil's mailman and neighbor in Minneapolis for six years in the mid-80s. I left the post office in 1987 and moved away from Bryn Mawr, but I have never forgotten Kathy. I truly looked forward to seeing her, for all the reasons others have listed. Even in brief transactions at the door or on the sidewalk, her kindness and love were striking and made my day. I awakened this morning thinking about my old route, looked up a few of my favorite people, and discovered that Kathy had passed. I live around DC now and wish I had known she was here; I would have loved to see her smile again after 30 years. But I can still feel it! Comfort and peace to all who love her.

I will never forget Dr. Kolb. She was an amazing and encouraging French professor and was instrumental in my going to graduate school and to Belgium. She would be proud to know that I'm in the process of completing my dissertation for my Doctorate of Philosophy at Cornell. She made an indelible impact on my life.

I am deeply saddened by this loss and send my sympathy to all her family. I have known Kathy for many years and enjoyed her company and our shared love of the work of Marcel Proust. She was a remarkable person and I am so honoured to have known her. My last memories of her are of her visit to London, UK, and our walks and conversation and of her signing her most recent book on Proust.
I hope I can keep in touch with her family.

I met Kathy when we were fellows together at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis. She was so kind and generous and helped me feel more comfortable speaking french, shopping at the marche and cooking. She was so knowledgable with french culture. Kathy was so generous, kind, and upbeat and faced whatever issues crossed her path with courage. Having just reconnected with her in DC last year, j I will so miss not seeing her again. A very special person.

My deepest condolences to Frau Kolb's family. She worked effortlessly to teach us German and cared for her students. You will be missed, Frau Kolb.

I was privileged to have had Frau Kolb as a teacher for only two semesters of German at SLU. I had many teachers throughout my time at university, but she stands out so easily--and for all the reasons everyone else has mentioned. She was so kind, so cheerful, so respectful. She made everyone feel welcome, important, capable.

She taught us another language, but I think we all learned way more than that from her. You can't write a textbook on empathy, on being a great human being. I think she knew that... and so her life was the text, and her joy and kindness were the language written on every page.

I'm grateful for the memories of her classes, her smile, her patience. And whenever I feel a task it too big, I know I'll remember her persistent encouragement.

My condolences to her family and her closest friends. She was an exceptional lady.

My condolences are with her family.
We called her Frau Kolb in German class. She was one of the kindest teachers. She wanted all of us to succeed. She was so patient with the music majors that had to take her classes. I will never forget her coming to my Senior recital when I sang Schubert's Shepherd on the rock. She came to me after saying it was Sehr Schoen. She was the only professor outside of the music building that came to our recitals. We loved her dedication!!! She was one in a million! She will be truly missed and never forgotten.
