Charles Savage Obituary

SAVAGE CHARLES W. SAVAGE (Age 89) Dr. Charles W. Savage, 89, physician, scholar, medical missionary and poet, a loving friend, devoted father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2007 at his home in Sherwood Forest, MD, with those who loved him dearly at his bedside. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ethel Savage. Dr. Savage was born on September 25, 1018 in Berlin Connecticut, received a BA from Yale University in 1939 and medical degree from the University of Chicago in 1945. He served as LT MC in the Us Navy from 1946 to 1953, he became a practing psychoanalyst, was an early researcher in LSD treatments for alcoholism at Spring Grove Sate Hospital, an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Emeritus, Johns Hopkins University, a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland and was a lifetime member of the Baltimore and District of Columbia Psychoanalytic Society. From 1988 to 1992 he was a pyschiatrist for the US Virgin Island Department of Health. In his retirement, Dr. Savage became a medical missionary to Guatemala, received an MA in Spanish from Middlebury College in 1999 and published a published a book of poetry in Spanish and English, "Las Tinieblas en el Dia de Pentecostes" His poems have been accepted publication in Aries, The Oak and the Cortland Review. He has also published 50 papers on psychopharmacology and psychoanalysis. Dr. Savage is survived by his daughter Emmy Savage of Chesterown, MD; a son, Charles Savage of Novato, CA and four grandchildren, John Borthwick, Andrew, Kimberly and Brittany Savage. A funeral service will be held on Saturday December 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 1 Church Circle, Annapolis, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Partners in Mission in Guatemala, c/o of St. Anne's Episcopal Church, PO Box 349, Annapolis, MD 21404. Arrangements by JOHN M. TAYLOR FUNERAL HOME.
