John Bartlett Obituary

There was a glorious reunion in heaven when John B. Bartlett completed his earthly journey June 10, 2018 and was ushered into the presence of his Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ. The words to Dr. Bartlett's favorite gospel song, "Jesus Paid It All", summarize his life's ambition, "Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain; He washed it white as snow."

Born in Corinth, New York, Dr. Bartlett was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Kenneth Bartlett and was one of six siblings. His sisters Marion Bellamy and Madeline Cudney and brother William Bartlett preceded him in death. Still living in New York are his brothers Lewis and Richard.

Dr. Bartlett married his college sweetheart Ruth Lillian Sniffen. They have two daughters, Cindy Edwards of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Jennifer Gregory of Knoxville, Tennessee. His three grandchildren are Kimberly and Christian Gregory of Knoxville and Aaron Edwards and his wife Elizabeth of Nashville.

Dr. Bartlett graduated from Corinth New York High School and graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he completed both a Bachelors and a Masters of Fine Arts degrees. He completed a PhD. in Rhetoric and Public Address at Ohio State University. During his tenure at Bob Jones University, Dr. Bartlett produced and directed the well-known Sunday afternoon Vesper program. He sang with many of the great opera stars of the day in the university's well-known opera program. Dr. and Mrs. Bartlett were soloists on Dr. Bob Jones Senior's radio program, "Dr. Bob Jones Says" and hosted their own daily radio program, "The Radio Hymnal".

Most of Dr. Bartlett's academic career was spent in teaching and college Administration. He served as the Chairperson of the Division of Language and Literature at Malone College in Canton, Ohio, and served on the School Administration at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee, for twenty years. For thirty years during his College tenures, Dr. Bartlett hosted student tours to Europe where he lectured in the major cities on The Fine Arts.

In Augusta, Georgia, Dr. Bartlett served with distinction as Vice President at Westminster Preparatory School and then as Headmaster at Augusta Christian Schools. He retired from his long life in Christian service upon completing a ten-year tenure at his beloved Augusta Christian Schools.

He was a member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, Augusta, Georgia, where he taught adult Sunday School and participated in the Prime Timers. He was a member of the Damren class who he loved as an extended family.

There will be a family graveside service in New York State where Dr. Bartlett will be buried with his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the John and Ruth Bartlett Scholarship fund at Augusta Christian Schools.

My wife, Sanga, and I will always cherish our memories of Uncle John and Aunt Ruth, their optimism and generosity of spirit. Uncle John was an engaging raconteur, brimming with memories and tales of his latest forays to the Holy Land, Europe, and elsewhere. Although our paths did not cross for many years, I know that we can pick up immediately where we left off. We're confident we'll have that opportunity when we cross over the Jordan in the sweet by and by. To Cindy and Jen, you were blessed!

I first met the Barletts when I was a little girl and my dad was a student at Bryan. They were so elegant but so very nice to a little kid. Later when my dad was head of Buildings and Grounds at Bryan I remember he had some plants to take out to their gorgeous home in Edgewater. Dr. Bartlett told me to go into the kitchen and his wife gave me icecream in a pretty bowl!
I later had Dr. Bartlett for Fine Arts in my own years at Bryan and it made a huge impact on my life.
The world will be bit darker without him and his wife but I imagine they must lead one of the choirs in heaven

My dad, Harry Hoffman, studied under the Bartletts at BJU and traveled with them on the quartet team. I was blessed to know them at Bryan College. They were a wonderful couple, so kind and encouraging. I still use the little hand-me-over silver candy dish they gave me as a wedding present. May many warm memories and God's peace enfold you in your loss, but Heaven's gain.

So very sorry to hear of your loss. I had Dr. Bartlet in speech class my freshman year, and he literally changed my life. Also spent some time with them during the summers I stayed in Dayton. Such a wonderful man.

I always look for the Bartletts when I returned to Bryan. I will truly miss him. John took me and several others to Europe. I treasure that trip and the memories of him.
Ruth would always call me Martie.
I will miss booths of them and John carrying his wife's purse.
I'm sure they ate singing for the Lord.

Cindy and Jennifer...I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. Your parents were always so gracious towards my parents. I always enjoyed going to your Edgewater house to visit. If you're ever here in Dayton or coming this way, I would love to see you. 4239917676 cell phone

Girls, we are so sorry for your loss. Dr. John and Ruth were dear friends from their days at Bryan College. (In fact, I work in a balcony office now in the Music Department and often go into your mom's old office..she herself left a great legacy!) Dr. John hired my husband at Bryan College in January of 1977 before Phil ever graduated from Southern Cal. We have enjoyed and loved Bryan College all of these years, and our four daughters all went here for their education. The Bartletts often had us over as a young married couple, and they showed by example how to live Godly lives. We missed them when they left Dayton. I can't go by the house without thinking of the two of them. I know you will miss your Dad, but he is in Heaven reunited with Ruth....I can imagine her big smiling welcome, not to mention our Savior's welcome home.

Dr. Bartlett and his precious wife Ruth were two of my favorite music professors at Bryan College. Their excellence in music balanced with their desire to teach and minister to students was such a blessing. I look forward to singing with them again someday in the presence of our Lord. Praying for the family as they feel the loss of his day to day presence.

I have wonderful memories of you Uncle John and Aunt Ruth. It makes my heart rejoice to see all the people lives you have touched through your walk with our Lord, including mine. Although I was only able to see you when you came up to New York to visit family, great memories were created. Now that you are reunited with your sweetheart Aunt Ruth you both can enjoy the many riches of Heaven that you both so well deserve. I love you Uncle John...your niece June M. Bartlett

This very dear friend, mentor and father figure to me passed from this world into the presence of the Lord. While I am sad, I rejoice for him because he often talked of the day when he would see his Savior face to face and be reunited with his beloved wife. He always spoke of it with an "other-worldly" look in his eyes. This dear man had a profound influence on my life and I will be eternally grateful for the time I got to spend with him. We often talked about things of the Lord and things at work, and when we finished he would say with a smile in his voice, "Well, we're making progress!" Dear John Bartlett, you didn't just make progress this time; you finished your race! And I know you heard that "Well done, good and faithful servant" from your Heavenly Father. I am so thankful for the hope I have in Jesus that I will see you again one day! Until...

John was such a sweet person. He taught my Sunday School Class many times and gave us much to think about. His voice was a beautiful addition to the Prime Time Singers. We have missed him greatly in the months that he has been away from Augusta.
