Howard Powers Obituary

Howard J. Powers

Howard was a resident of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Glendale for 69 years. The Powers family of five moved to Arizona from Wisconsin in 1951.

His education in Wisconsin began in a one-room schoolhouse with grades 1-8. Howard graduated from St. Mary's High School, attended Ventura Junior College in California, and Arizona State University where he played football for the legendary Frank Kush. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college earning a BA and MA in Education.

Following his graduation Howard served in the Arizona Army National Guard for six years.

The Phoenix Union High School District hired him in 1963. During his 31 year career as an Educator, Coach, and Administrator he served Maryvale High School, North Phoenix High School, and Camelback High School.

He was a dedicated Rotarian for 46 years with the Phoenix East Rotary Club and was Club President, and was Arizona 5510 District Governor in 1996-97.

Howard lost a short battle to heart disease on July 13, 2020. He is joining our "Angel" Brooke Powers. He is survived by his wife for 56 years Sigrid (Lynne), Howard J. Powers II (Arden) Chicago, IL, Bret Powers (Megan), grandson Gavin, Huntington Beach, CA, and sister Sandra Medeiros, Concord, CA.

Howard loved life, his family, sports, Globe Trotting, cruising, dancing, and had unbelievable "Handyman" skills. Son Howard played linebacker at the University of Arizona, and son Bret played quarterback at Arizona State and The Ohio State University. Above all he was an American Patriot and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, there will be no Celebration of Life. Those who wish to remember him may donate to: Glendale Rotary Club Education Scholarship in the names of: Matt O. Hanhila and Howard Powers to be Awarded to worthy students at Glendale Community College with a major in Mathematics or Education. Send to: Glendale Rotary Club, PO Box 987, Glendale, AZ 85301. Matt O. Hanhila and Howard J. Powers were Educators for a combined total of 91 years.

Howard and Lynne were the first people we talked to about moving to Kino. Ray and I were impressed with their friendliness and willingness to answer questions. Kino isn't the same without them. I am so sorry, Lynne, that he is gone. Fondly, Bev and Ray

We were so surprised to hear of Howard´s passing. We remember his big smile and outgoing personality. Lynne and Howard were the first people we met in Kino. They spoke enthusiastically about Club Deportivo. We miss Howard and miss Lynne too since she may not be coming back. They were the heart of Kino.

I'm so sorry to receive this news and my heart goes out to the Powers family. I was fortunate to have both Howie and Bret on my varsity basketball team and you could not ask for a better parent of tremendous athletes to be there to support the program. Mr Powers was first class and was a tremendous role model for his sons who were both humble and classy.

My condolences to Lynne, Howie and Bret. Your husband and dad was one of the kindest and thoughtful people I have known. Thanks to two of the best parents to raise two men that are just like their dad. God bless you.
