James J. Flavell

James J. Flavell passed away unexpectedly on September 18, 2004 in Overgaard, Arizona at his and his soulmate's retirement dream home, with special friends. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio and moved to Arizona in 1962, attended Glendale High School and graduated from the Army & Navy Academy in Carlsbad, California. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1967 retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1995 after 28 years of dedication serving his country. His Navy career included tours in Vietnam and the Persian Gulf as well as the privilege of sharing several country ports with the love of his life. Following retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a city carrier for 9 years and had a special devotion to his customers. He was looking forward to his retirement in the near future. He also received his certificate of Travel Industry Technology at Phoenix College in 2003 and was pursuing his AA degree. A most generous, caring and unselfish person, he is survived by his loving wife, Marie; mother, Mary; 8 children, Kristin, Colleen, James (Deborah), William (Carrie), Patrick (Andrea), Timothy, Dorian (Rossi) and Gillian (Christian), son-in-law, John; 15 beautiful grandchildren; his brothers, Robert (Kate), Charles (Karen), Ed, John (Vicki), Ronald, Donald (Beth); sister, Mary Beth Wells (William); 2 special sister and brother-in-laws, Rene and George and William and Barbara; and especially his greyhound, Lantic. Several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Jim will be dearly missed by all those who loved him. Visitation will be Thursday, September 23rd, from 6 - 8 P.M. with Rosary at 8 P.M. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 East Indian School Road. Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 24th, at SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral, 6351 North 27th Avenue, with burial and military honors following. A reception will be held immediately after the graveside service at St. Bridget's Hall at SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral. The family suggests donations to the American Red Cross, 6135 N.
