Wayne Esaias

Wayne Evor Esaias, a devoted husband, distinguished scientist, educator, and cherished family man, passed away at the age of 79 on June 6, 2024, in Columbia, MD, after a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer. Born on May 8, 1945, in Parkville, MD, to Evor Esaias and Eunice P. Esaias (née Grammar), Wayne dedicated his life to his family, advancing scientific knowledge and nurturing his many passions.

Wayne's academic journey began at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a BS in Biological Sciences in 1967 and was a member of the varsity lacrosse team. He furthered his education with a PhD in Biological Oceanography from Oregon State University in 1972.

His illustrious career as a NASA scientist spanned 39 years, during which he made significant contributions to our understanding of climate change through remote sensing of the oceans using satellite imaging. In addition to his work at NASA, Wayne was an Adjunct Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland, supporting research on the use of satellite data to study the changing abundance and distribution of nectar forage for honeybees and other pollinators.

Wayne was a passionate naturalist and lifelong learner. He was a Master Beekeeper and an active member of the Maryland State and Howard County Beekeepers Associations. He mentored dozens of new beekeepers and loved to share his expertise and enthusiasm with the community. As an Eagle Scout and Boy Scout troop leader, he shared his love for the outdoors and mentored many young scouts. His love for gardening was a lifelong pursuit, particularly creating pollinator gardens and native wildflower meadows. Wayne also enjoyed carpentry, homebrewing, metalwork, birdwatching, and camping.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mae Elaine Esaias (née Edwards); his two children, Colin Esaias of Liberty Hill, TX, and Caroline English of Brookeville, MD; and his eight grandchildren: Jacob, Maddox, Samuel, Ryleigh, Sydney, Drew, Meredith, and Arthur. He is also survived by his sister Jean Moyer.
