Dr Lazare set a tone of maturity, egalitarianism, and mutual respect. Entering Umass as a medical student when he was newly at the helm, I found the entire institution to be held in this calming presence. He inspired us as medical students to not only be our best, but to be authentic doing so. I will remain ever grateful for his teachings.

I am deeply saddened and shocked at Aaron Lazare's death. He was my first 'boss' at MGH, and it was because he hired me as assistant director of outpatient psychiatry that I came to Boston in 1970. We found all sorts of reasons to chat too long because we wanted to. He was a kind human being, with a wonderful understated sense of humor. Once, he said, his father asked what he did all day. He told his father he had just seen a woman patient who had trouble having a good relationship with a man. His father replied, 'If you ask me she is too particular'. He will be greatly missed.

I could not have imagined a more wonderful friend, mentor, colleague, advisor, and trusted leader, for whom I had the deepest respect and to whom I was most grateful. How fortunate I was to be in his presence for so many years and to see and experience his transformational impact on our students, our school and our profession. The stories Aaron shared with us about his life, his family and his lessons learned captured the essence of compassion and humanism, shaped us all and kept us mindful of what it means to care for and about others.

Dr. Lazare's teachings still influence the way I see and interact with patients. He was a great leader and I use his examples today when I teach kindness and empathy with my medical students. It was an honor to have known him and my condolences to his family.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of the wonderful Dr. Aaron Lazare. I will never forget his influence on me, and his kindness to me.
He truly made the world a better place, just by being in it. He was a man among men, a leader, a mentor, and a brilliant but humble man, who lived his life with integrity.

I will never forget Dr. Lazare's kindness. I've worked at UMass for over 20 years and he was always there with a smile and hello in the halls. My Mom was also an employee at UMass and when she passed away, he was there for my family and I during this very diffiucult time. He was a very special person and will be missed.

Aaron was a special person. Thoughtful, caring, a ready sense of humor, great integrity. His work on apology and understanding of outpatient psychotherapy were profound. I am forever grateful for our discussions early in my career as a psychiatrist. My sympathy to his wife and large family.

As a medical student in the mid 1980's I loved it when Aaron would teach parts of the psychiatry curriculum. He made it all come alive. To this day my practice is informed by words of advice he offered during my training. I will always be grateful.

Aaron gave me my first faculty job at UMass 29 years ago. Having already spoken with several department chairs, I had the opportunity to meet Aaron, who wanted to know what was important to me and what I would need in order to do what I felt was important. None before had asked. He was a great and thoughtful advisor whom I valued as my Department Chair, and then as our Dean and Chancellor. My thoughts go to Louise and the Lazare family. It is with a deep sense of loss that we mourn the passing of Chancellor Emeritus Aaron Lazare, MD. As chair of psychiatry, and later as dean and chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Dr. Lazare helped to transform the commonwealth's public medical school into a leading hub for medical education, biomedical research and patient care. Dr. Lazare's contributions were profound; his impact remains unmatched; and his legacy will always endure. I am saddened to learn of Aaron Lazare's passing. He was truly a giant in his fields of Psychiatry and Academic Development. Aaron, for all his many talents, always found the time to chat with everyone. I will always remember our many chats in the Lamar Soutter Medical Library where I worked. He accomplished much in his life and influenced so many students and clinicians. His life's work will continue through them. He was one of the most influential people on my life - through his articles before I met him; in person as the Chair of my department, a fellow lecturer, and later as the Chancellor Dean. I was stunned to hear today that my friend, Chancellor-Emeritus Aaron Lazare of the UMass Medical School, passed away from complications of the kidney cancer that he fought during his time as Chancellor. In addition to being one of the world's great human beings and a devoted father and husband, Aaron, and his carefully selected team, built the UMass Medical School into one of the world's great medical schools. The award of the 2006 Nobel Prize to Craig Mello, a scientist that he had recruited and mentored, was one of his proudest professional moments. I had the unique privilege of working with him and learning from his humanitarian leadership style. The world is so much richer because of his work.
