JAY ANDERSON Obituary

ANDERSON, Jay Herbert Jay Herbert Anderson passed this life on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the age of 90 after a period of declining health. He was born on October 8, 1930 in Lynn, MA and went to public schools in Swampscott, MA. He developed an enduring passion for football and also found great joy in his early friendships; several became classmates at Dartmouth and lifelong friends.

Jay finished Swampscott High School in 1948 and entered Dartmouth College, graduating in 1952 with an A. B. in Economics. Jay met Edythe Scales in 1951 during summer employment prior to their graduations from Dartmouth and Wellesley Colleges, respectively. Marriage would have to wait as Jay was inducted into the U.S. Army for a two-year period of service in the Korean War. He received an Army Commendation Medal for his service, working as a Sergeant in a warehouse near the front lines.

After his discharge in 1954, Jay and Edythe married and rented an apartment in his home town. Jay entered a two-year degree program at Bentley College in Boston, MA and upon graduation in 1956 he promptly joined the Audit Division of Price Waterhouse. Jay spent 31 years in the Price Waterhouse Boston office, with a tour in PW's Buenos Aires, Argentina office during 1964. He was admitted as a general partner in 1970. The family's first home was in Melrose, MA and after three children they moved to Weston, MA. Jay and Edythe moved to New York City in 1988 where he spent the final three years of his career as a Litigation Specialist in PW's New York National Office. When Jay reached the mandatory partner retirement age of 60 in 1991, he and Edythe moved their primary residence to New London, NH.

Jay was involved with alumni affairs at both Dartmouth and Bentley Colleges. He skied in the winter and enjoyed lake activities in the summer and always found time to watch or attend a college or professional sports game. He served for five years as Secretary of the Dartmouth Class of '52 and wrote a monthly class news column for the Alumni Magazine. He was a member of the Class of '52 Executive Committee. He also served on the Bentley College President's Advisory Council. After his retirement, Jay was appointed to the President's Advisory Council of Colby-Sawyer College, where he served until he had to enter assisted living.

Jay had a love for nature and especially found comfort and peace sitting lakeside. As a child, his family spent summers on Cobbett's Pond in southern NH. In 1965, Jay purchased a summer cottage on Horn Pond in Acton, Maine because he wanted his family to experience lakeside living as he had in his youth. In 1976, they moved to Lake Sunapee, where an all-season cottage also allowed easy access to skiing. The lake house remained a refuge for much of Jay's retired life.

Jay will be remembered for his deep commitment to his family and friends. and his kindness and willingness to help others.

He is survived by Edythe, his wife of 67 years, three children (Elaine, Tracey and Jon), and four grandchildren. A private burial will be held later this spring. Memorial gifts can be made to: Lake Sunapee Protective Association, P.O. Box 683, Sunapee, NH 03782; Dartmouth College Athletics - Varsity Football, 6066 Development Office, Hanover, NH 03755; or Bentley University Scholarship Fund (Audit), 175 Forest St., Waltham, MA 02452.
