SHAWN WINTER
July 24, 2007
This evening I received the sad news from UDT – SEAL Association which he was a member. I was immediately taken back to the “Chief’s Petty Officers Club on the banks of Lake Erie” Al, was well honored in our community, we spend many hours exchanging our experiences. He was beloved by my community that he was selected as an Honorary SEAL for his life time achievement to the NSW program, which is not given to many who do not our pin.
In 1989, he was tasked by the command in Washington to establish a SEAL orientation program in Little Creek to mirror the successful SEAL program on the West Coast established in 1970. Al knew very little about the Teams but drove head long into the program to make it work.
During the 1990's, Al worked with the Dive Motivators, the host SEAL teams and the Training Detachment to develop the course of instruction. Mini-BUD/S graduated several hundred 17 year olds who were considering NSW as a career option. To date, there have been two former Sea Cadets to command SEAL teams and numerous cadets who have become SEALs.
Until recently, cadets participated in the East Coast Reunions. Al had the cadets doing the cooking, set up and take downs and general go-fetch duties. Reunion time was something Al looked forward to each year to catch up with the many friends he had made through the years. Al had the cadets enter the competitive events winning their share of medals in both the run and the swim.
Tonight I am sad, but happy that I know him, we will honor to him at the 2008 UDT-SEAL reunion when all of us toast a beer, and he be doing the same – looking down.
Farewell shipmate.

The toll of the ship’s bell reminds us of the reverence we owe to our departed Shipmates. Let us who gather here not forget our obligations and in silence breathe a prayer for our departed Shipmates.

Ruth:
May you find comfort in this moment of sadness and certainty of faith to live through this hour. My condolences to you and your family. Al was a great man who loved his family, his nation and the Navy. God go with you my friend and may you experience fair winds and following seas as you now intercede for us! Don't give up the ship.

Al, you were more than a great man, you were a great friend. I will never forget the memories and the Massman's deli lunches we had. You touched so many people in positive ways throughout your life. May you rest in peace.
