John Haggarty Obituary

John Haggarty
The former president of U.S. Ceramic Tile Company in Canton, age 94, died Feb. 17, 2015, after a struggle with Alzheimer's. John was a Lieutenant Captain in the Army Air Corp, flying 151 missions in the Philippines as a P-38 pilot, an accomplishment that earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. He often credited his safe return from war with a second mission to fulfill: marry Virginia McGrath who lived three blocks from his family home in Wyandotte, Mich. They wed on Nov. 24, 1945, and had five children in their 69-year marriage. A graduate of the University of Michigan, John was a committed Wolverine fan. He possessed profound business acumen, a wonderful Irish wit and an unbridled passion for his family. His parents, Robert and Sarah Haggarty; and siblings: Will and Robert Haggarty, Marge May and Mernie Watts predecease John.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; and children: Lynn Sturm of Canton, Maureen of Pittsburgh, Pa., Peggy (Stan) Cravens of Union, Ky., Shawn (Michael) Adley of North Canton, and John of Powell, Ohio. He has nine grandchildren: Amy Sturm, Lauren (Sturm) Schweizer, Jill Sturm, Ryan, Devan and Jaclyn Adley, Adrian (Cravens) Suttle, Charlie and Liz Cravens, Sean and Sarah Haggarty; and five great- grandchildren.
Viewing will be held Sunday, (Today) Feb. 22nd., from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lamiell Funeral Home, 1353 Cleveland Ave. N.W., Canton, and for one hour prior to a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church on Monday, Feb. 23rd., with Father Donald King as celebrant. Entombment will be in North Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 7388 Turfway Road, Florence, Ky. 41042. The family wishes to express great gratitude to the staff of Elmcroft Senior Living for their wonderful care. Online condolences may be made at:
