Christopher Haggarty died bravely and peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, September 7 in Murray, Utah. Chris will best be remembered for his kindness, empathy, joyous sense of humor, ability to connect with others, adventurous spirit, equal love of the mountains and the beach, loyalty to both the New York Yankees and New York Giants, and of course, his passion for music.
Born on August 17, 1977, in Glen Cove, New York, to Kevin and Catherine Haggarty, Chris was the second of two boys. His childhood was spent adventuring throughout both East Norwich and Larchmont, NY with summers at the beach in East Hampton or the Shenorock Shore Club. When little sister Lizzie joined the family in 1984 Chris solidified his place as the silly, fun brother always up for a good time.
After graduating from Fordham Preparatory School in 1995, Chris went on to Ithaca College where he earned a degree in Political Science and a minor in following his favorite band Phish around the country with his trusty sidekick, a rescue dog named Judah. Chris spent his post-grad years living throughout the US with stints in Alaska, California, North Carolina, New York, and Utah. No matter where he was, he made connections and new friends through his kind nature and enthusiastic interest in others. Years spent working in the hospitality industry allowed his outgoing personality to shine, bonding with everyday people and celebrities alike. In his last years, Chris settled down in Salt Lake City, UT where he met and fell in love with his wife Janice. Together they enjoyed traveling, good food, concerts, and everyday life as a family.
Chris is survived by his wife Janice Haggarty and stepchildren Kacey and Rowan Roberts, daughter Charley Grace Barron-Haggarty, mother Cathy and stepfather Patrick O'Sullivan, brother Mark and his wife Amy, sister Lizzie Ryan and her husband Rob, and nieces and nephews Kai, Caleb, Jackson, and Quinn. He is preceded by his father Kevin F. Haggarty, beloved grandparents, Leonard and Frances Haggarty and Warren and Betty Grantz, and great aunt Sister Corona Marie - all who surely welcomed him with a warm embrace, and perhaps a swift kick in the pants.
The Haggarty/Ryan families would like to extend an incredibly heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of the Intermountain Medical Center Thoracic ICU for their dedication, kindness, and extraordinary care.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on October 5, 2024, at 11:00 am at The Church of St. Augustine in Larchmont, NY. All are welcome.
Like many, Chris' life was not without its struggles. So that those struggles may be a hopeful lesson to others, please consider donating in his honor by clicking on the links below the obituary to the Divided Sky Residential Recovery Program, or St. Christopher's Inn.
