Scott Benson Obituary

Scott Richard Benson CHARLOTTE - Scott Richard Benson, 54, died Saturday July 21, 2012, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Scott was born in Fairfield, Connecticut on March 8, 1958. He moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin before settling down in Dayton, Ohio where, in 1976, he graduated from Archbishop Alter High School. During his time there, Scott was a standout member of the football team, and was awarded a scholarship to attend college at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. At Wittenberg he was a member of the FIJI fraternity, and a four-year starter at guard and letterman on Wittenberg's football team, which advanced to two national championships during his four years there. After college, Scott moved to New York City where he lived for five years and worked at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company. It was during this period of his life that he established many of his life-long friendships, which are still in close contact today. After meeting Anne Pipkin in New York, they became engaged and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1985. Scott spent the second part of his corporate career at Interstate/ Johnson Lane and First Union National Bank's Capital Markets Group. For the past six years Scott had been passionately involved in the Athletics Department at Charlotte Country Day School (CCDS), which all three of his children attended. Scott will be known and remembered for touching the lives of countless young athletes at CCDS; he especially treasured the mentor-ing relationships he had with J.V. and Varsity football players, lacrosse players, wrestlers, and field hockey players. This past spring he was particularly involved in his youngest daughter Linley's Varsity Lacrosse team, of which she was a Captain. All those who knew Scott characterized him as a loyal, caring, and outgoing man who lived his life with passion and zeal. Scott is survived by his mother, Gretchen; his siblings, Jane, Cathy, Chris, Gigi, Erica and their families; and his children, John, Hunter, and Linley Benson. He leaves behind many who grieve for him, including Sandy and Hal Elsasser and their four children; Sue and Jimmy Gale and their two sons; the family of David Gale; Anne Pipkin and Kevin Queen and Kevin's children Lance and Lauren; and an amazing number of friends who shall be remembered forever by the family for their unfaltering love for Scott. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday July 27 at 11:00am at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road in Charlotte, North Carolina. The family will receive friends following the service in All Saints Hall at the Church. Memorials may be made to Charlotte Country Day School, 1440 Carmel Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28226. Mr. Benson was one of my dads best friends, I knew him very well and loved him with all of my heart. If my dad was on the phone,99.9% of the time it was with him. I remember the night that he died, earlier in the afternoon, he was helping my dad out by moving some furniture, not realizing that was the last time that my dad would ever see his best friend. He had a special place in my heart and always will. Forever and always I pray for you guys during this ruff time.

John, Hunter, and Linley

My name is Allen Ash and I was one of Scott's roommates in his final year at Wittenberg. Another of the roommates, Dick Nourse has let me know of your father's passing. He was "so alive" were my words to Dick. And he remains as alive as you want him to be. Remember that each of you has a pocket full of your father's energy and a heart full of his optimism. Remember that and use it, share as he would; freely. It is an endless supply.

Please accept my deepest sympathy in this difficult time and my sincerest well wishes for a future, following at least a little bit in his great, big footsteps.

Scott was developing into a fine young man when he was in his early teens. I remember him playing for our football team and being a leader by example. He set High standards for himself at an early age. He then did what was necessary to achieve those goals. I am sure he passed these qualities on to his children giving them the ability to suceed in life. I know Alter High School was proud to have graduated this fine gentleman. I was proud to have seen him play football both in high school and in college. His effort was constant and amazing.
God bless his family.

I first met Scott when he worked with Interstate-I thought he was the fastest talker I had ever met --- took we a good while to understand him. Not only was he a fast talker he was fast at answering a call for help. Name it and Scott did it. When our parents died he was the first one at the door with a plate of food - pork tenderloin. I like to say Scott was faster than the "cassarole ladies" from our church --- and they are fast. He never shied away from helping. I also watched him face his trials with honor and dignity. He was the younger brother I never had. Our thoughts and prayers to Ann and the children.

I first met Scott when he went to work for Interstate-Johnson Lane -- I had never met a person who could talk so fast and smile the entire time. Took me about a year to understand what he was saying. Scott was the most genuine, caring people I have ever known. Scott was the first peerson at our doorstep when our parents died - and always with food-pork tenderloin! I like to say Scotty was faster with the food than the cassrole ladiies from our church - and they are fast. I witnessed the many trials he faced _ always with dignity and class! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family>

Scott was a teammate and fraternity brother. While not staying in touch over the years, we share a common bond and with that I send my condolences. I remember Scott as primarily upbeat in his personality - like a big teddy bear - which is often not too common during college years.
