Stevenson Vaughn Obituary

Stevenson Marchant Vaughn
November 3, 1965 - January 31, 2021
Charlotte, North Carolina - Stevenson Marchant Vaughn of Charlotte, NC, son of the late Vernon Aiken Vaughn, Jr. ("Buddy") and Harrold Lee of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, January 31, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Lundy Vaughn of Charlotte; son, Allen Stevenson Vaughn; daughter, Anne Lee Vaughn; a brother, Vernon A. Vaughn, III, his wife, Mary Matthews Vaughn, of Gastonia, NC; niece, Elizabeth Vaughn Edwards and husband, Henry Duke Edwards, of Farmville, NC; nieces and nephew, Charlotte Lee Vaughn, Sarah Garland Vaughn and husband, Carlos Garcia, and Benjamin Reilly Vaughn of Greensboro, NC; and his aunt, Elizabeth Lee Boyd, of Kingsport, TN. He was predeceased by his brother, Lee Harrold Vaughn; sister-in-law, Carla Liske Vaughn; and uncle, Lon V. Boyd.
Steven was born in Charlotte, NC, in 1965. He was a proud native Charlottean who attended Eastover Elementary School, Alexander Graham Junior High School, and Charlotte Country Day School, where he was a 3-year letterman on the football team. Steven graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he double majored in Political Science and French. Steven was a member of Sigma Chi Social Fraternity and the UNC Rugby and UNC Tae Kwon Do Clubs. During college, he enjoyed being an exchange student in Saint-Malo, France, and later attended the Universite De Paris IV - La Sorbonne in Paris, France. After college, Steven worked at Europ Assistance Worldwide Services in Washington, D.C.
After a few years in Washington, D.C., Steven decided to pursue a Master of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where he met his wife of more than 20 years. After finishing graduate school, Steven was proud to join the Charlotte-based bank, NationsBank, in the Bethesda, MD, office. After graduating from the Commercial Management Associate Program in 1995, Steven enjoyed a productive career at Bank of America, working as a Commercial Markets Underwriter in CMBS Capital Markets for 19 years. Steven then served as a Director/Senior Underwriter in Commercial Real Estate Capital Markets at Wells Fargo Bank for over 7 years. Steven was a mentor, educator, and friend throughout his career with a great attitude and humble, respectful approach that was recognized by all. In 2019, Steven was recognized by his peers and named a Wells Fargo Pinnacle Champion for demonstrating excellence in service, performance, leadership, and risk management.
Steven served as a Board Member of the Charlotte Country Day School Alumni Council for nearly 10 years, including reunion committees and the Alumni Council Nominating Committee, as well as various parent volunteer roles. In 2016, he was honored by the Alumni Association with the Alumni Service Award for his countless hours of volunteerism and dedication to the Country Day alumni community.
Steven was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, Charlotte, NC, where he grew up and was confirmed, and was a former member at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC, where he served as an usher and greeter. Steven served as a mentor with Eastover Elementary School and volunteered with the American Lung Association and with political campaigns.
Steven was a man of integrity and a genuine family man who never missed his son's ball games or a chance to share his daughter's artwork. He loved family vacations to Pawleys Island and Oak Island, attending college football games in the Carolinas with friends and family, attending Carolina Panthers football games including Super Bowl XXXVIII, exploring America's national parks with his family, and visiting countries throughout Western Europe. He often met friends and acquaintances to help them plan their own trips to Europe with particular interests in WWI (the war in which Steven's grandfather fought) and WWII battlefields. Steven's love of travel and history was infectious.
Steven had a wide range of eclectic musical taste, encompassing R&B, funk, new wave and all types of rock n' roll. Steven particularly favored the "Manchester Sound" of the 1980s and was a huge fan of The Smiths. Steven had an enduring love of live music and was always open to see any band in any genre at any time. Steven saw music as a gateway to the soul, and he enjoyed sharing it with his many friends.
Steven's friends describe him as a gentle giant with an endearing smile and an ever positive outlook. He was a friendly guy who made you feel as if you'd known him your whole life. A happenstance meeting in the elevator could result in a 45-minute conversation with Steven, and a conversion with him always left you with a smile on your face. His friends say that he was the glue that held his friend groups together.
Steven enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, like a bike ride with his family, lunch with a friend, a walk around the neighborhood, a sunset at the beach, and all of God's nature, especially a field of sunflowers.
Steven's family would like to thank the many friends and neighbors who have supported them with meals, flowers and prayers for Steven. As Steven would say, "Thank you, kindly."
A private service will be held for the family at Christ Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 13 at 11am with a live stream available on the church website at www.christchurchcharlotte.org. Steven will be interred in the church's Memorial Garden alongside Buddy, Harrold, Lee, and Carla.
In lieu of flowers, memorials for the Vaughn Education Fund may be sent and made payable to R.W. Baird & Co, Inc. with "Vaughn Education Fund" on the memo line and mailed to: R.W. Baird & Co. Inc, Attn: Emily Rector, 4350 Congress Street – Ste 400, Charlotte, NC 28209, or memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Charlotte, NC.

Me deepest condolences to the Vaughn family. Just learned of Steve's death. I'm stricken with grief. Steve was genuinely one of the nicest, most caring individuals on this earth. He always spoke so highly of his son and daughter. I fondly recall Steve and Allen attending a recent Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia, coming by my West Point class tailgate, and sending me an awesome photo collection he took that day.
We sorely will miss a wonderful man.
May the Good Lord welcome Steve in Paradise with open arms.

My deepest sympathy to the Vaughn family. I was fortunate to work with Steve for many years at BofA and more recently Wells Fargo. Such a kind, generous, thoughtful friend. Always quick with a lunch invitation or stopping to chat just to see how things were going. Also being a native Charlottean, we often talked about friends we had in common, attending AG, and the changes the city has gone through over the years. His love of life, his family and his friends always shone through. He will be deeply missed by all those lucky enough to have known him.

Steven was such a genuine, humble and good hearted person that will be deeply missed. I recall Steven and I carrying a conversation about God and his love for Christ as we shared a common love for Christ. I am deeply sorry to have received this sad news and I will be praying for his wife, children and the Vaughn family for comfort, strength and peace during this very difficult time. I will repeat a phrase Steven said to me, which was: “God is still on the Throne” and indeed God is still on the Throne. So, we pray to God to provide the comfort and peace that only God can give – the peace, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Again, my deepest condolences and prayers for the Vaughn family -- God bless you.

I only knew Steven for a short period of time. As many have said if you knew him for 45 minutes you had thought it was for years!! I met Steven walking my Dog (MacKenzie) in the mornings!! He would start smiling about a block away when he saw us!! He was definitely a gentle man & loved to talk (which I do as well)!! I know he will be missed by so many!! My prayers go out to your family & friends!! May he “Rest In Peace”!!! GOD BLESS!!

Steven, I wish I had a chance to say goodbye. To thank you for your kindness. Your friendship, and your always positive attitude. Our fun Y-Guides adventures and commercial real estate chats. You had a contagious happiness to you. I always enjoyed our conversations and being together. You are deeply missed by all who knew you! I pray for your family and hope at some point they can find peace in all of this overwhelming sadness. I know you will continue to look out for them. As was the case with me when I lost my dad when I was young, your legacy will continue to play a BIG part in your family’s lives! Thanks for being the great person you were! Godspeed my friend!

Steven: I'm so glad to have gotten acquainted with you now some 10 years ago, when we first met working out at the Y early mornings. Who knew that several years later, our wives would become co-workers and friends as well.

Like so many others, I am stunned and saddened by your passing. It's always been a joy to talk to you - your sense of humor and optimism were truly contagious. I will always fondly remember our chats - from swapping office gossip to industry happenings and trends.

Rest in peace Steven. This world has lost a true difference-maker.

There are no words. The world, and a very large group of loved ones, has lost a terrific person. Steven brought light and often laughter to every room, every conversation, and taught us all a bit about being kind to one another and appreciating every moment. My prayers will continue for Steven and family.

Steve and I worked together at Europ Assistance in 1990, and he attending my wedding. Truly a great guy with not a mean bone in his body. Can’t wait to get to Au Trappiste in Paris again soon, to toss back a few beers in his memory. You went too soon, my friend, but we’ll drink together again some day. Peace and love to your family.

Caroline, Allen and Anne Lee, we are all so incredibly devastated with the loss of Steven. He was kind, gentle, most humble man who loved his family and friends beyond measure. Caroline, Allen, & Ann Lee if there was ever a man that adored his family more than life itself it was Steven. There are no words that could offer appropriate condolences. In the deep hole left in all of us my heart goes out to you. Steven wants those holes filled and life lived on enjoying every minute! Soak it all up because one day he will want to talk about every detail when you meet again! May you be wrapped in the palm of Gods hand and know you are all engulfed in prayers of love, peace, comfort, understanding and so much more!! Blessings to each of you!
