Dr. Collins...I have your photo in my office and I can see your smiling face whenever I enter the area. I think about you quite often and reminisce about the times we conversed while standing in the parking lot of Dollar General (lol). You told me that you had retired...but was asked to return to JCSU and teach for a few more years. Students, teachers and administrators (at JCSU) gravitated to you due to your personality, wisdom and unconditional positive regard. "The world cares very little about what a MAN or WOMAN knows; it is what the MAN or WOMAN is able to do" (Booker T. Washington). "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way" (Booker T. Washington). "Gray skies are just clouds passing over" (Duke Ellington). Respectfully submitted by:

I am looking at your smiling face as I have your photo in my office. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't gaze upon you and that big SMILE!!! We shared good times while employed at JCSU...back in the day. We often ran into one another at Dollar General. You told me that you had retired but JCSU officials wanted you to return and teach (MATH) a little longer. Even though I feared MATH while in college...I know that I could have learned the subject matter much easier based on your temperament, approach, mindset, attitude and demeanor. You were a jovial person and you meant business when the time came. Rest in PEACE, Dr. Collins. "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way" (Booker T. Washington). "Gray skies are just clouds passing over" (Duke Ellington - Jazz Musician). Respectfully submitted by: Artemus Flagg, Ph. D. of Charlotte, NC.

Dr. Collins always tried to sound like a preacher in his class as he was wrapping up class. I loved to imitate him walking into class saying, "How y'all doing class?" and the class would straighten up. Then when they noticed that I was impersonating his voice, they were like, Awww man! I also did work study for him. He and I talked about the Scriptures and our faith in God. He used to say to his students, "If you can't help me, don't what? Hinder meeeeee!" He was Smith's crown jewel and will be dearly missed. I can't wait to see him again in Heaven. May Christ keep and console his family and those who knew and loved him.

I am looking at your photo and your big smile. Your photo remains in my office and I can see you everyday. You had a habit of shopping at Dollar General and for unknown reasons...we would (by surprise) meet and greet one another...such a positive person with an optimistic outlook and always a good as well as an uplifting conversation until we departed from the parking lot. "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way" (Booker T. Washington). Respectfully submitted by: Artemus Flagg, Ph. D. of Charlotte, NC.

Legendary! I remember the first time I had a class taught by this man. Dr. Thomas Collins taught with pride and meaningful purpose. Great teacher and such a charismatic man. His presence was inspiring and left inspirational foot prints that inspired me teach as well. Each year I would find myself telling my students about Dr. Thomas Collins and the reason why they should be Mathematicians.

Dr. Collins was my FAVORITE professor at JCSU. He was so humble and walked with such grace. He really helped me through a lot during my time at Smith. He was truly a father not just to his own but to me as well. I am truly heartbroken but I can not be selfish because he is resting in Paradise now along with his love ones. I love you always and forever Pop Collins.

My most sincerest and heartfelt condolences go out to the immediate and extended family of Dr. Thomas Collins. Our paths first crossed in 1988 at Johnson C. Smith University. Dr. Collins was a very kind, gracious and helpful individual who positively influenced multitudes of students, colleagues, associates and friends. He always had a big smile and was very approachable. He was extremely intelligent and a great professor. I appreciate the opportunity of having known him and interacted with him as often as possible. The last time I saw him, he said he had retired from JCSU and was asked to return and continue teaching. Dr. Collins had what it took to be an outstanding professor who reached out to students even though he represented a tough discipline that he made easy...due to his approach. I will never forget Dr. Collins because he was one of the few colleagues I immediately gravitated to while employed at JCSU. Now that Dr. Collins has crossed the bar (something all of us must do at life's end), we can loose him and let him go. Dr. Collins is now at an Eternal destination where we have yet to arrive. There is a brighter side somewhere and surely Dr. Thomas Collins can walk around HEAVEN all day. Dr. Collins was indeed a GENTLEMAN. "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way" (Booker T. Washington). Respectfully submitted by: Artemus Flagg, Ph. D., LPC of Charlotte, NC.
