Dr. Sabelli authored ground-breaking studies in psychopharmacology and pioneered Co-Creation and Complexity theory. He detected and identified "Bios", a new pattern in nature. Bios is a creative pattern distinct from randomness and from chaos http://creativebios.net/ Dr. Sabelli graduated from the Colegio Mariano Moreno in Buenos Aires, received his MD in 1959 at the age of 22 from the University of Buenos Aires and received his Ph.D. from the University of Buenos Aires in 1962. During 1959, he worked as a research follow under sponsorship of the Argentine Society for the Advancement of Science and from 1960 to 1961 he worked as a research assistant for the Argentine Council for Research (CONICET) under the direction of Dr. James Toman at Chicago Medical School in the USA. He was named assistant professor in the department of pharmacology of Chicago Medical School and remained there until 1964. Dr. Sabelli returned to Argentina in 1964 as a career investigator and professor of a neurophysiology course in the psychiatry department of the University of Buenos Aires. In 1966, at the age of 28, he was appointed professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Litoral, Rosario, Argentina. Hector's father, Antonio Sabelli, a physician and philosopher, died when Hector was just 14-years-old. Antonio's brother, Alberto, gave Hector the responsibility of publishing and continuing his father's work which he continued throughout his entire lifetime. His mother, Elena Di Benedetto, PhD, a physiologist who worked on the research team of Nobelist Bernardo Houssay, was the other root for Hector's work. She taught him to strive for high scientific goals and to support his research with his clinical practice to be independent from academic hierarchies. Hector was known as a great lover of dark chocolate, particularly in the company of a unquestionably ripe banana and of swashbuckling stories of pirates which he read, or invented, for his sons on many a night. He was both intense and playful. He is remembered by his family for his boundless energy, his love of travel and broadening his horizons and his dedication to the intellectual life. Professor Sabelli is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linnea Flynn Carlson-Sabelli; two sons, Martin Sabelli of San Francisco and Rafael Sabelli; Rafael's wife, Rochelle; and two granddaughters, Olivia and Alessandra of Oakland, CA. I was thinking about Dr. Sabelli today. My name is Carla Hawkins and I live in Valparaiso, IN. I became a patient of your Dad in 1989 at Midwest Neuropsychiatric Associates, in Chicago, while he was Assistant Professor at Rush University. He was my third Psychiatrist in four years. I credit him for saving my life and giving me hope for living with Bi-polar Illness. I remember keeping a daily worksheet of emotions, sleep quantity & quality, and at the end of one year he entered all the data to create an algorithm and told me I had Mild Bi-polar II with rapid cycles. I knew he had heart issues. He passed me on to Dr. Peter Fink since I was enrolled in a clinical study that Dr. Sabelli and Dr. Fink were partners in this study. I had tremendous success for 2 years, but the University was unable to get a pharmaceutical company to fund the drug. Being a patient of Dr. Sabelli was the best 8 years of my life. He even met with my parents and convinced them to drop my personal loan to them for going to college. I was the only daughter to go to college. Your father made a big impact on my recovery and helped me lead a productive life!

Hector was my favorite professor at the Chicago Medical School where our class awarded him Teacher of the Year. Hector and I subsequently conducted and published research and traveled to a scientific conference where we presented our data. In addition to mentoring my scientific endevours, Hector was also a friend and was a guest in our home. He was a philospher and an intellectual of the highest order. He will be missed.
